Aus 104-4 (49 ovs); Target to win: 323 | Scorecard

Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami picked up two wickets each to give India the upperhand against Australia, at stumps on Day 4 of the first Test in Adelaide on Sunday.

Australia were struggling on 104 for four in 49 overs at close, with Shaun Marsh unbeaten on 31 and Travis Head on 11. They need another 219 runs for victory with the fifth and final day's play left.

Ashwin made the first breakthrough when he had Aaron Finch caught at short leg for 11 as the batsman opted not to review despite the ball not hitting the gloves or the bat. He was earlier given out leg before wicket but got a reprieve via the DRS after Ishant Sharma was ruled to have overstepped.

Debutant Marcus Harris, who made 26, was caught behind off Shami, who also accounted for Peter Handscomb (14).

Usman Khawaja played a reckless shot to give his wicket away to Ashwin, who took two for 44 in 19 overs.

Earlier, India set Australia a 323-run target to win the series-opening Test after being bowled out for 307 in their second innings after lunch.

Spinner Nathan Lyon finished with six wickets as India's batsmen collapsed for the addition of only 47 runs after lunch, having resumed on 260 for five on a warm, cloudy day at Adelaide Oval.

Paceman Mitchell Starc took three wickets, with Cheteshwar Pujara top-scoring with 71 for the touring side.

The highest successful fourth-innings chase at Adelaide Oval was the 315 scored by the hosts against England in 1902.
