Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up four for 87 as South Africa were bowled out for 286 in their first innings.

Bhuvneshwar claimed a wicket each in his first three overs to leave South Africa reeling on 12 for three at one stage.

AB de Villiers led the fightback for South Africa as he counter-attacked to hit 65 from 84 balls, hitting 11 fours in total. He helped South Africa rally after three early wickets as he put on 114 runs for the fourth wicket with Faf du Plessis, who scored 62.

The lower order contributed with useful knocks as Quinton de Kock hit a quickfire 43 from 40 balls. Vernon Philander made 23, Keshav Maharaj scored a useful 35 and Kagiso Rabada made 26, while Dale Steyn was unbeaten on 16 as the last four wickets added 82 runs to help the hosts finish on a high.

For India, Ashwin picked up two for 21, while Shami, Bumrah and Pandya picked up a wicket each.

With around 14-15 overs left in the day, India will hope to do well with the bat and not lose too many wickets before stumps which will see them take the upperhand on the opening day.
