Welcome to the coverage of Day 1 of the opening Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town, on Friday.

India's long winning streak in Test cricket is under threat in a quick-fire three match series against South Africa, where their status as the top ranked nation in the format faces a stiff examination.

Virat Kohli's side have won nine successive series to climb to the top of the International Cricket Council's rankings but most of the success has come on batting friendly wickets.

But while past touring sides have crumbled under the barrage of pace, this is an experienced India squad, 13 of whom have previously toured South Africa and will know what to expect.

Though India, top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings, have won their last nine Test series in a row, stretching back to August 2015, their record in South Africa is poor.

Since 1992, they have won just two of the 17 Tests played there, losing five of the six series, with the 1-1 draw in 2010-11 their best return.
