Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan hit half-centuries to help Delhi Capitals get the better of Kings XI Punjab by five wickets, in New Delhi, on Saturday.

Captain Iyer guided Delhi home with an unbeaten 58 from 49 balls as the hosts stumbled briefly at the end losing a few quick wickets, before they claimed victory with two balls to spare.

Dhawan had rallied Delhi after the early wicket of Prithvi Shaw (13), as he stroked 56 from 41 balls, putting on 92 runs for the second wicket with Iyer.

Delhi then lost four quick wickets in the space of 31 balls but Iyer held his nerve and carried his team through.

Delhi are third in the standing with 12 points from 10 games, the same as behind Mumbai Indians (12 points from 10 games) and Chennai Super Kings (14 points from nine games).

Earlier, Chris Gayle smashed five gargantuan sixes into the night sky before Delhi Capitals put the brakes and restricted Kings XI Punjab to 163 for seven.

Gayle top scored with a quickfire 69 from 37 balls, reaching to the half-century in 25 balls and hitting six boundaries besides the towering sixes.

Coming back into the team, young leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane returned figures of 3/40, playing an influential role in helping pull back Punjab after Gayle's blitzkrieg.
