In the next over, Nicholls shapes up to cut Jayant but he gets a thick outside edge which flies over Kohli in the slips for a four and keeps out the last two balls.

Axar is back into the attack, as he replaces Ashwin. There is a huge appeal for leg before wicket as Ravindra is hit on the pads trying to defend, which is turned down.

Ravindra gets an edge off the last ball which stays low and goes past the slip fielder for a couple of runs.

Jayant getting some useful overs under his belt. Nicholls watchfully keeps out the over from the off-spinner, who is getting some sharp turn and bounce from the rough.

Two overs left in the day as India crowd the batsmen with a lot of close-in fielders.

Ravindra comes forward to defend but gets a thick inside edge which pops up on the leg side, as Axar attacks the rough from over the wicket.

Ashwin comes back into the attack, to bowl the final over of the day, with four close-in fielders around the bat.

Nicholls defends the first ball right under his eyes and gets the next off the inside half of the bat to square leg.

The third ball again goes off inside edge but square on the leg side before Ashwin switches to over the wicket.

Ashwin gets the ball to turn miles and also bounce as Nicholls is beaten all ends up and Saha comes up with a fantastic save.

New Zealand are struggling on 140/5 in 45 overs at stumps on the third day, still needing 400 runs for victory with five wickets in hand.

Nicholls has battled hard to be unbeaten on 36 from 86 balls, while Ravindra is on two from 23 balls.

Ashwin was once again the pick of the Indian bowlers as he claimed 3/27, while Axar claimed 1/42.
