South Africa beat India by 31 runs to win the 1st ODI in Paarl to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

In a match that ebbed and flowed beautifully, South Africa bowlers eventually found their mojo to keep India in check and wrest control of the match before winning it by 31 runs.

Chasing 297 for victory, India got off to a brisk start before Markram took out Rahul for 12.

Kohli and Dhawan then put on a 92-run stand to keep India in the hunt but just went it looked like the visitors were running away with the game, South Africa's bowlers ripped into India's fragile middle-order.

After Dhawan and Kohli were dismissed, none of the other batsmen stood their ground and put on a fight and India went from 138 for 2 to 188 for 6. Ashwin, Bhuvi couldn't do much but a 50-run partnership between Thakur and Bumrah frustrated the South Africans but it was too little too late as India fell short by 31 runs.

Ngidi on to bowl the final over and he starts with a full ball that Thakur drills to cover for a single.

A dot later, Ngidi bowls a wide on the off side to Bumrah.

Yorker is then dug out by Bumrah to backward point for a single.

Thakur then gets a single to get to 49.

Another wide yorker and Bumrah plays it to backward point for a single.

Thakur then slashes the full toss over cover to get to his fifty. But South Africa win the match by 31 runs.

Shamsi continues and Thakur starts the over with a single to the leg side.

Bumrah then swings his bat and gets a single to deep mid-wicket.

The batsmen then take a single each off the next three balls as Bumrah blocks the last ball of the over. 5 come off it.
