England thrashed New Zealand by seven wickets, with almost three overs to spare, to make it to the final of the ICC World T20.

Jason Roy played a starring role with a 44-ball 78, and was named the player of the match.

Joe Root (28 not out) and Jos Buttler (32 not out) then ensured England made it past the line without much ado with an uneaten 49-run stand (off 29 balls) for the fourth wicket.

England, champions in 2010, will face either hosts India or 2012 winners West Indies in the final at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

India and West Indies play in the second semi-final at the Wankhede tomorrow.

Root and Buttler aren't taking any unnecessary risks. They need less than a run a ball in any case. 

Sodhi (4-0-42-2) to bowl the 17th over. Root (27 not out) helps himself to a couple of boundaries in the over before Buttler smashes a couple of straight sixes.

England need two more. They have more than three overs left.  

And Buttler (32 not out) seals it with a six off Santner.

Roy (78) is finally dismissed in the 13th over, a leg break by Ish Sodhi doing the trick for New Zealand. 

Roy's 44-ball innings was inclusive of 11 hits to the fence, and two over it, and he helped Root add 28 for the second wicket. Captain Eoin Morgan is the new batsman. And he is out leg before first ball. 

Jos Buttler avoids the hat-trick.

Santner, in hi second over, finally provides New Zealand the breakthrough they so desperately needed, having Hales (20) caught at long-on by Munro.

Hales' 19-ball innings was inclusive of a boundary and a six, and he helped Roy add 81 runs (off just 50 balls) for the opening wicket. Joe Root is the new man in. 

A single off Sodhi helps England get past the 100-run mark, in the 11th over.

Ish Sodhi is handed the ball in the seventh over, replacing Santner (1-0-10-0). A single off the first ball helps Roy complete a well-deserved fifty. 

It is his maiden T20 fifty and has come at the best possible time. 

Grant Elliott replaces McClenaghan (2-0-20-0) in the attack in the eight runs. He gives away just four runs.

New Zealand forced to make a first bowling change as early as the third over, Mitch McClenaghan replacing an expensive Anderson (1-0-16-0). Hales smashes the fifth ball for a huge six. Roy also finds the fence as 13 runs come off the over. 

Milne's second over also costs 13, with Roy clearing the long-off fence, as England manage 49 off the first four overs. 

Spin is introduced in the fifth over, Mitchell Santner replacing McClenaghan (1-0-13-0). A leg bye helps England reach the 50-run mark. Roy hitss successive boundaries as 11 come off the over.

Alex Hales and Jason Roy to open the batting for England, and it will be Corey Anderson first up for New Zealand. Roy helps himself to four boundaries in the over. 

Adam Milne to bowl the second over. Roy helps himself to another boundary in the over, this time towards backward point.

England have restricted New Zealand to 153-8, with Ben Stokes (4-0-26-3) taking three wickets.

Stokes to bowl the 18th over. He strikes with his third ball, having Ronchi (3) caught by Willey at long-off. Grant Elliott arrives with only 15 balls left. 

He can only watch as Anderson (28) skies one and Jordan makes no mistake. Elliott survives the hat-tick ball.

Jordan ends an effective spell (4-0-24-1) in the penultimate over, the kiwis getting to the 150-run mark in the same.

Stokes to bowl the final over. He has Santner (7) caught by Jordan off the second ball. It's an excellent final over.

Ross Taylor joins Anderson at the crease. With six overs to go the Black Caps are well-placed at 111 for three. 

Rashid will finish, to bowl the 15th over. He ends with forgettable figures (4-0-33-0).

Anderson smashes a six as 12 runs come off Plunkett's (4-0-38-1) final over. A spectacular catch by Eoin Morgan cuts short Ross Taylor's (6) stay, Jordan being the beneficiary.

Luke Ronchi is the new man in.

Adil Rashid switches ends, replaces an expensive Stokes (2-0-20-0) in the 12th over. Munro welcomes him with a boundary to backward point. Another switch hit!

A single by Munron, off Ali, helps New Zealand get to the 100-run mark, in the 13th over. 

Liam Plunkett returns to bowl in the 14th over, replacing Rashid (3-0-23-0). He starts off with a wide. However, he strikes with his second ball, having Munro (46) caught by Moeen Ali at third man. 

Munro's 32-ball innings was inclusive of seven boundaries and a six.

At the halfway mark, the Black Caps are sitting pretty at 89 for one. 

Moeen Ali is introduced into the attack in the 11th over, replacing Rashid (2-0-16-0). He strikes with his third ball, catching Williamson (32) off his own bowling.

The New Zealand captain's 28-ball innings was inclusive of three boundaries and a six, and he helped Munro add 74 runs (off just 50 balls) for the second wicket, thereby laying a soild foundation to build on.

Good evening and welcome to the coverage of the World T20. Today we have New Zealand taking on England in the first semi-final at the Feroz Shah Kotla. 

The news is, England have won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first. 

Kane Williamson, the Black Caps captain, remains unperturbed. He says he wanted to bat first anyways. 

England have named an unchanged side, while New Zealand have made two changes. 

Martin Guptill is back in for Henry Nichols while Adam Milne replaces Nathan McCullum. Trent Boult and Tim Southee aren't considered yet again.
