Indian opener Gautam Gambhir [ Images ] capped a memorable 2009 by ending the year as the No 1 Test batsman in the ICC [ Images ] rankings issued on Thursday.
Gambhir's opening partner Virender Sehwag [ Images ] remained static at No 4 while Rahul Dravid [ Images ] gained one place to occupy 13th spot. Sachin Tendulkar [ Images ] lost one place to slide to 17th just a rung above VVS Laxman [ Images ] who gained one spot.
Two Sri Lankans - Mahela Jayawardene [ Images ] and Kumar Sangakkara [ Images ] are placed between Gambhir and Sehwag.
There was not much change lower down the batsmen's chart, with West Indian Shivanarine Chanderapul gaining one place to jump to eighth. South Africa's [ Images ] Jacques Kallis [ Images ] and Kiwi Ross Taylor are joint ninth.
In the bowlers' chart still headed by South African Dale Steyn [ Images ], Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh [ Images ] remained on the sixth spot while Zaheer Khan [ Images ] lost one place to drop out of the top 10.
England [ Images ] off-spinner Graeme Swann [ Images ] was the biggest mover as he jumped seven places to third place, the highest in his career. The 30-year-old took nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the South African second innings, during the second Test in Durban.
