2nd Test: Ashwin gets five to check NZ's progress

Umesh Yadav to bowl the final over of the day. Patel gets an inside edge off the first ball and he steers the second ball behind point to get two runs. He throws his bat at the next ball but it stays low and then digs out a yorker.

Patel takes a single from the final ball of the day as NZ reach 232 for nine in 69 overs at stumps on the third day.

They stretch their overall lead to 244 runs with just a wicket in hand and two more days to go.

Ashwin kept India in the hunt as he took five for 69 in 22 overs.

Strangely, India have a spread out field for Jeetan Patel, who drives Ashwin through the vacant cover region for two runs. He times the next ball a bit better to get four runs through the covers.

Ashwin now switches to round the wicket and Patel gets a single from the fifth ball.

Ojha then strikes with the first ball of his new over. Bracewell is caught on the crease and is struck in front of the stumps by the arm delivery from Ojha to be dismissed leg before wicket for 22.

New Zealand are 234 ahead with just one wicket in hand.

Ashwin completes his five-wicket haul, his third of the series with the wicket of Tim Southee. He tosses it up, inviting Southee to drive through the off-side but the right-hander misses and is bowled for two.

Ashwin's figures now read five for 62 in 21 overs.

Ashwin continues to chip away at the wickets. Franklin finally loses his cool and charges down the wicket but is beaten in the flight and is stumped by Dhoni.

Franklin's patient innings end after scoring 41 from 90 balls as NZ lose their seventh wicket.

Ashwin's figures now read four for 59 in 18.5 overs.

Tim Southee is promoted a place in the order to number nine and he gets off the mark with two runs through the covers.

Bracewell walks out to join Franklin, who is unbeaten on 38 from 81 balls. Franklin hits Ojha to the covers for one and Bracewell gets off the mark in style with a boundary back past the bowler to bring up NZ's 200 followed by a single on the leg side.

Yadav replaces Ojha from the North end as NZ continue to inch their way to a comfortable total. Bracewell hits the second ball to the leg side for a single.

Bracewell gets into the act straightaway. He despatches a full toss from Ashwin over the midwicket fielder for a four and ends the over with a single.

India allowing the match to drift with defensive tactics and even the New Zealand tailenders are looking comfortable out in the middle.

van Wyk sweeps Ashwin to the leg side straight to the fielder. He then gets the edge which goes past Sehwag at first slip for a boundary as NZ continue building their total.

Ashwin provides India with the breakthrough as he traps van Wyk leg before wicket for 31. The quicker delivery catches van Wyk on the crease and he is caught right in front of the stumps.

Van Wyk continues sweeping Ojha, this time to fine leg for one. Franklin hits it to long-on and they get two easy runs. Ojha fires one in to the batsman's pads which he glances it fine on the leg side for two runs and then slog sweeps the last ball for a boundary to take the lead past the 200-run mark.

Ashwin from the other end and this time he has some fielders in catching positions. Franklin hits it to mid-off for a single and van Wyk takes one to bring up the 50-run stand from 76 balls.

A huge appeal for LBW against van Wyk as he is struck on the pads attempting to play the forward defense shot.

The field is well spread out and both batsmen help themselves to a single each in Ojha's 14th over.

Yadav resumes his battle against van Wyk. Once again it is short as van Wyk cuts it through point to get two runs and fends the third ball to fine leg for one. Franklin plays it towards point for one and once again van Wyk pulls a short ball to square leg for one.

Van Wyk is lucky as the thick outside edge off Yadav flies behind the wicket for a boundary. The visitors get another four runs from the next ball as the direct hit gets them extra three runs while van Wyk steers the next ball wide of the thirdman fielder for a couple.

Both batsman take a single each to end the over as Yadav concedes 12 runs in that over.

Yadav then hits van Wyk smack on the head with a quick bouncer as he tried to chip down the wicket. The very next ball van Wyk is struck on the arm by another quick delivery from Yadav and again he needs treatment.

NZ are 171 for five in 50 overs for an overall lead of 183 runs. Franklin is on 33 from 71 balls, while van Wyk is unbeaten on 16.

Van Wyk plays the sweep but it goes straight to Gambhir at square leg but defends the next couple of balls. He then hits it to midwicket for one and Franklin chips down the wicket and luckily for him the ball goes one bounce to mid-off.

Yadav is back into the attack to replace Zaheer as India continue with pace from one end. Van Wyk steers it to the thirdman region for one to take New Zealand past the 150-run mark and Franklin gets a single from the fifth ball of the over for two runs from that over.

Ojha back into the attack in place of Ashwin, who has taken two for 45 in 14 overs. Franklin gets a single to the point region from the first ball and van Wyk sweeps it fine on the leg side for one for two runs from that over.

Franklin drives Zaheer through the covers and Gambhir makes a good stop on the ropes to save a boundary. Kruger van Wyk keeps out a full delivery on the off-side and leaves the bouncer alone to end the over.

Franklin hits Ashwin towards the point region for a single and van Wyk does the same two balls later for one.

Zaheer bowls a quick bouncer to van Wyk who was looking to chip down the wicket. Van Wyk walks across again and Zaheer bowls a quick yorker on the leg stump which the right-hander keeps out. He steers Zaheer to the thirdman region for one and Franklin ends the over with two runs to the cover region.


14:58   Flynn caught at slip for 31

Ashwin having a long chat with Dhoni as they discuss field placings. A slip and short cover are the only two catchers close to the batsmen. After two deliveries from Ashwin to Franklin, Dhoni adds another slip fielder.

The left-hander drives a full delivery through the covers for a single.

Ashwin then gets the much-needed wicket as Flynn is caught at first slip by Sehwag as he looks to play the cut shot.

Flynn is dismissed for 31 from 65 balls as NZ lose half their side.


14:51   NZ stretch lead past 150-run mark

Zaheer over the wicket to Flynn, who tries to pull the first ball but misses and lets the next one go. The third ball stays very low after pitching beating Flynn and even Dhoni on the way for four byes behind the wicket.

The next ball carries at a good height to the keeper and Flynn completes the over with a boundary through point.

Franklin now looking to adopt a positive approach as he jumps down the wicket to Ashwin and lofts him down the ground for a four.

Zaheer bowls a bouncer to Flynn who ducks under it but the ball bounces twice on the way to the keeper. The next ball, however, goes at a good height to Dhoni.

Flynn guides the fourth delivery to the thirdman region for one. Franklin sprints across for a quick single to Tendulkar at mid-on but the veteran misses the direct hit at the bowler's end.

Play resumes in the final session and it is Zaheer, who will start proceedings for India.

Flynn defends the first ball to mid-off and the second to midwicket. He starts off cautiously after the tea break as the first over of the session is a maiden over.

Ashwin to bowl the second over after the tea break. Over the wicket to Franklin, who defends the first ball and drives the next to covers. The left-hander cuts the third ball to deep point for a single for the first run of the session. Flynn gets a single off the fifth ball.

TEA - DAY 3


Flynn is beaten as he tries to drive a wide delivery outside the off-stump and defends the next two deliveries from Ojha back to the bowler.

With two left-handers at the crease, Dhoni hands the ball to part-timer Suresh Raina. He bowls slow and gives it a lot of air making Franklin stretch but he cannot get any runs in that over.

It's change of ends for Ashwin as he replaces Ojha. Flynn reads the carrom ball well as it bounces a bit extra and he guides it to fine leg for one.

Franklin drives a full delivery through the covers for a boundary in the final over of the session.

At tea, NZ are 123 for four in 35 overs to stretch their lead to 135 runs. Flynn is on 25 from 44 balls, while Franklin has made 11 from 26 balls.

NZ lost four wickets for 94 runs in 30 overs in that session to take the upperhand.

James Franklin is the new batsman. He gives Ashwin the charge and hits him through midwicket for his first boundary as NZ reach 116 for four in 30 overs.

Flynn is loving the cut shot. He tries to cut a short delivery but hits it straight to Yadav at point and two deliveries later he repeats that shot.

He is forced to defend the last two balls off the front foot.

The runs are drying up and boundaries are becoming a rarity. Franklin takes a single in Ashwin's eighth over to take NZ to 117 for four after 32 overs.
13:56   Taylor falls leg before wicket to Ojha

Ojha finally makes the breakthrough with the big wicket of Taylor. The Kiwi captain is once again dismissed leg before wicket trying to play the sweep shot after scoring 35.

Taylor went across and tried to play the sweep but missed and the ball struck him right in front of the stumps, just like he was dismissed in the first innings.

Flynn is playing some good shots as Taylor looks to spend some time at the wicket. A short ball is cut behind point for a four by Flynn who brings out the sweep shot off the final ball of that over for another boundary in the over.

Taylor offers the straight ball defence to Ojha who continues to bowl flatter. Taylor paddle sweeps it round the corner for two runs and repeats the shot for another double off the next ball.

The last ball is outside off-stump and Taylor once again plays the sweep to deep square leg for one.

Despite a defensive field, NZ are scoring at more than four runs per over which should give the Indian team something to think about.

Ojha has a loud appeal for leg before wicket against Taylor as he struck in line and the ball but umpire Steve Davies is not interested. Taylor starting to look a bit tentative and is beaten off the final ball of that over.

The next over from Ashwin fetches just a single as Flynn is still resisting the temptation to play the sweep, a shot that has caused his dismissal thrice in the series so far.

Flynn is looking on the drive today as he crashes Ojha through the covers for a wonderful boundary. Ojha's length is getting flatter as he fires one down the leg side and Taylor sweeps him fine for four leg byes.

NZ are 97 for three after 25 overs for an overall lead of 109 runs.
13:29   Yadav claims both NZ openers

The spin twins -- Ojha and Ashwin -- doing well together as the runs have dried up with NZ reaching 71 for three in 20 overs.

Taylor plays it to the leg side to get a single while Flynn plays the cut shot but a good stop from Yadav at point. Flynn then play it across the line to the covers to get two runs as Ojha gets it to spin and bounce a bit more. The last ball also pitches on the same spot and this time Flynn gets an inside edge.

Taylor then plays it delicately past the first slip fielder for a four. Flynn then gets another couple of fours in that over as he cuts past point and then off the next ball pulls a short ball through midwicket.


13:13   Williamson out for 13

Ojha keeping things tight as he bowls a maiden over forcing Williamson to defend. India introduce spin from both ends as R Ashwin comes into the attack from the other end.

It's a defensive field for Ashwin to start with both deep point and deep square leg in place.

Taylor tries to play the sweep but misses and the appeal is turned down by the umpire as the batsman is struck outside the off-stump. NZ get two leg byes and Taylor then survives a close run shout as Umesh Yadav hits the stumps at the bowler's end.

However, Ashwin gets the wicket in his first over. Williamson edges it to Sehwag at first slip to be caught for 13.

Finally India introduce spin in the form of Ojha, who replaces Zaheer Khan from the north end. Taylor used the sweep to good effect against the Indian spinners and was very positive from the outset. But for now, he is watchful and takes a single on the leg side.

Williamson plays and misses as he tries to cut it through the point region.

Taylor is looking good as he drives a wide delivery from Ojha through the covers for a four and then takes a single.

Williamson gets one before Taylor pulls a short ball to deep square leg for another single. Williamson takes one to end that over as NZ get nine runs from it.

Zaheer switches to over the wicket and has employed a 7-2 field to Williamson. He wants to force Williamson to take the bait and try to pierce the off-field but he is showing good application at the moment. He gets a thick outside edge off the final delivery which goes between the slips for a four.

India are keeping the spinners on hold as Yadav comes on to bowl his sixth over. He is bowling with good pace and seems to have got some confidence back after his two-wicket burst.

He tries a slower delivery against Taylor who flicks it to midwicket for one. Williamson ends the over with a boundary as he hits a full delivery through midwicket.

Zaheer continues from round the wicket and Taylor can only defend the incoming deliveries before he drives the final ball through the covers for a single.

Taylor then flicks Yadav through square leg for two runs and then drives it through the covers for another couple to bring up 3000 runs in Test cricket.

The veteran Zaheer from round the wicket. He is looking to shape it in to the batsman before getting one to hold it's line but Williamson is up to the task and is content to play out the over for a maiden.

Williamson strokes Yadav through the cover region to get three runs courtesy of some slack fielding on the ropes as NZ reach 40 for two in ten overs.


12:29   McCullum out for 23

Yadav makes it two in two as he gets both the Kiwi openers. He claims the wicket of Brendon McCullum, who is caught behind for a quick 23 from 21 balls.

McCullum is forced to dab at an outgoing delivery which moves enough to take the edge to Dhoni.

The in-form Ross Taylor starts with a smashing boundary as he cracks a full delivery through the cover region.

A muted appeal for LBW as Taylor is struck on the pads but it is clearly going down the leg side while he plays and misses the next ball.

New Zealand have lost six for two in three overs after the lunch break.
12:23   Guptill dismissed for seven

Pacer Umesh Yadav has the ball after lunch and he strikes in his very first over. Guptill fails to make most of a full toss as he inside edges it and is bowled for seven as India make the first breakthrough.

Kane Williamson is the new batsman and he defends the first three balls.

LUNCH - DAY 3

Zaheer continues to bowl round the wicket in what could be the final over before the lunch break. McCullum takes a single from the second ball on the off-side and Guptill is content to let the rest of the over go through to the keeper to end the session.

At lunch, New Zealand hold the upperhand as they reach 29 for no loss in five overs with McCullum on 21 from 15 balls and Guptill on seven.

Their overall lead now is 41 runs.

Dhoni seems to be a bit worried as he brings spinner Pragyan Ojha into the attack now. McCullum continues his quick start as he slaps a full delivery through the covers for a boundary and then gets a single off the next ball.

Five runs from that Ojha over as NZ are off to a flier.
11:28   McCullum lucky to survive LBW appeal

McCullum looks to be in aggressive mode as he hits Zaheer through the covers and gets two runs before Tendulkar stops it on the boundary. However, he crashes the next ball powerfully through that region but this time Tendulkar can only watch it cross the boundary ropes.

And immediately Dhoni takes out the third slip and sends him to the cover region. Zaheer switches to round the wicket and immediately hits McCullum on the pads and there is a huge appeal for LBW but it is turned down by umpire Steve Davies. Replays shows that McCullum was lucky to survive that shout as the ball seemed to be heading bang into the middle stump.

Guptill then edges the next ball and it goes between the slips for a boundary.

India on the defensive rightaway as they have a sweeper cover to stop the boundaries on the off-side.

This time Dhoni gives Yadav the new ball and McCullum takes a single to the fielder on the cover boundary. Martin Guptill gets a thick outside edge which is misfielded in the gully to give him two runs and he drives the next one to covers where the fielder fails to stop cleanly to give a single.

Brendon McCullum, who was out for a duck in the first innings, inside edges the first ball and defends the next. He then smashes a wide ball from Zaheer through the covers to get off the mark with a boundary and follows that with three runs to the midwicket region.

Southee was single-handedly responsible for New Zealand's good showing with the ball. The pacer took seven for 64 in 24 overs to help bowl out India for 353 and trigger a lower order collapse on day three.

India scored 70 runs for the loss of five wickets in 18.5 overs on day three before they were bowled out. At one point, they lost four for 19 before the last pair of Ashwin and Yadav added some useful runs.

The match is evenly poised at the moment with New Zealand managing a lead of just 12 runs.

Southee has bowled nine overs on the trot as the last pair continue to frustrate the visitors.

Yadav will have to keep out an entire over, and he is up against Boult. He defends the first four balls before he is bowled off the fifth ball for four.

The last wicket partnership helped India add 33 runs in 53 balls with Ashwin finishing unbeaten on 32 from 40 balls.

India are bowled out for 353 to concede a narrow 12-run lead.

Boult to Ashwin who refuses a single from the first four balls before pulling the fifth ball to deep square leg and taking one. Yadav defends the last ball as it goes to plan for the hosts.

Southee continues to bowl as New Zealand look to end the partnership. Ashwin gets a boundary off the third ball as he flicks Southee fine on the leg side to a ball that drifted on his pads to move to 28 from 37 balls.

With the field up to stop a single Ashwin lofts Southee back over his head for a boundary as New Zealand's lead is now cut to 12 runs.
10:50   Last pair fight for India

Ashwin takes a single from the first ball of Southee's new over to midwicket. Yadav shows great focus to sway out of bouncers aimed at his body by Southee. 

Yadav is then beaten outside the off-stump and defends the last two deliveries to end the over.

The last pair has added 24 runs so far as India trail by 21 runs.

Boult back for another spell, replacing Bracewell. Ashwin flicks him through midwicket for two runs and then keeps strike for the next two deliveries.

Boult cuts him in half with a superb delivery that came in sharply, going through his defences and just over the stumps to get India one bye.

Yadav somehow keeps the last two deliveries out and gets a huge cheer from the crowd.

Ashwin gives himself room and tries to hit Southee through the off-side but fails to connect. He then edges it to thirdman but turns down the single and then hits a full toss through the off-side for a four.

Ashwin then steers the fifth ball to the thirdman region for one, giving lastman Yadav just one delivery to face, who is beaten off the final delivery.

Ashwin defends the first ball and hits the next to mid-on and takes a single before regretting his decision at the non-striker's end.

Bracewell bowls a bouncer to Yadav, who ducks under it and fends the next one awkwardly towards the slips. He manages to keep out the next two balls to end the over.

Southee continues with the ball, looking to wrap up the Indian innings and get his eighth wicket of the innings.

Ashwin steers it to thirdman and then hits it down the ground to long-on but refuses a single on both occasions.

Ashwin tries to steer it again but the edge is dropped by Guptill at third slip and he runs across for a single.

Southee is unlucky yet again as Yadav's edge falls short of the keeper and it goes past him for a boundary.

New Zealand's lead is now 31 runs.
10:24   India lose 9th wicket

Southee has been brilliant with the new ball, made the second new ball count to leave the Indians in a spell.

Ashwin will be looking to score some quick runs with one just wicket left for India, in Umesh Yadav.

Bracewell drops it short and Ashwin punches it through the covers for a boundary as the lead is now 41 runs. He pulls the next ball to deep midwicket but refuses to take the single.

Two balls later, he steers it past the slips for a boundary through the third man region to score some useful runs for India.

He drops the final ball on the off-side and sprints across for a quick single.

Southee also bowls it short to Zaheer and he is struck on his body as he looks to turn it on the leg side.

The next ball is a beauty as it pitches short and takes the edge of Zaheer's bat who looks to fend but ends up caught behind for seven.

Rajneesh Gupta writes on Twitter: "Southee takes a five-for. He,by the way, is one of the 3 bowlers to take a five-for in all 3 formats of the game-Tests,ODIs & T20Is!"

India losing wickets in a heap and Southee is causing the damage. He gets his second wicket of the over as Ojha gets a thin outside edge and is caught behind for a duck.

That was a smashing start from Zaheer, announcing his arrival with a huge six. Meanwhile, Ashwin steers Bracewell to the thirdman region for a single. Zaheer gets a bouncer first up from Bracewell and the next ball he is ready for it as he backs away and cuts it over point but there is a fielder on the fence to give him just one.

Southee makes it two in a row. This time he gets the wicket of MS Dhoni, who also falls leg before wicket to the cross seam incoming delivery. The Indian captain played down the wrong line and was given out leg before wicket after scoring 62 from 94 balls.

Southee now has wonderful figures of five for 39 runs in 18.5 overs.

New batsman Zaheer Khan gets into the act immediately as he smashes Southee back over his head for a six.

Bracewell comes in for a new spell and he replaces Boult, who struggled to control the new ball. Bracewell makes a good start as he beats Dhoni with his first delivery, back of length delivery that goes past the outside edge as Dhoni is caught fishing.

Dhoni then chips down the wicket and slaps Bracewell through midwicket for a boundary. Bracewell then bowls it short and wide and Dhoni despatches it behind point for another boundary.

Bracewell then bowls a beauty, a full delivery just outside the off-stump which beats Dhoni all ends up.

Southee continues to bowl it outside the off-stump and Kohli is happy to see them go through to the keeper.

But a rare error of judgement from Kohli causes his downfall. He offers no stroke to an incoming delivery from Southee that strikes him plumb in front of the wickets.

Kohli is out after a brilliant innings of 103 from 193 ball, which included 14 boundaries and a six. He added 122 runs in 33 overs for the sixth wicket with Dhoni to revive the Indian innings.

R Ashwin is off the mark with a couple to the midwicket region.

The first over with the new ball went for runs as Boult was hit for two boundaries in that over.

That was Kohli's first Test hundred at home and his 15th century in international cricket, having hit 13 in ODIs. His scores in previous innings were 75, 116, 22 and 58.

Southee bowls a maiden over to Dhoni, who is content to let all the deliveries go to the keeper.

Boult gets the first ball to come in to Kohli, who flicks it on the leg side for one and Dhoni does the same to bring up India's 300 in the 83rd over. Boult struggles to control his line and another ball on the pads is sent to fine leg region for one by Kohli.

New Zealand take the new ball straightaway after 80 overs. Left-arm pacer Trent Boult gets the brand new cherry and up against him is MS Dhoni as New Zealand go on the attack again with three slips and a gully.

The first ball is well pitched up and Dhoni punches it down the ground for a boundary back past the bowler to bring up his half-century in some style. The India captain took just 72 balls to hit his second fifty of the series, hitting six fours and two sixes.

Two balls later he hits one to the cover region for a single.

Kohli flicks Bolt through the midwicket region for a boundary to complete his century, his second in Test matches. It took him 187 deliveries to complete his hundred, with the help of 14 fours and a six.

Southee to bowl the second over of the day. Dhoni hits it gently to the cover region for one to give the strike back to Kohli, who is three away from his century.

But the youngster is content to defend as Southee gets the ball to come in to the right-hander. He continues to bat solidly as just a single comes from that over.

Bracewell to bowl the first over and facing him is India captain Dhoni, who flicks the first ball to fine leg region for one for the first run of the day. Kohli offers no shot a delivery pitched way outside the off-stump. The right-hander then gets the first boundary of the day off the next ball as he flicks Bracewell through the square leg region to move to 97.

Welcome to Rediff.com's coverage of the second Test match between India and New Zealand in Bangalore. The match is evenly poised after two intense days of see-saw battle.

India will be looking to build their total on day three, while New Zealand will be hoping to take the new ball and claim a few early wickets.

At stumps on Day 2, India were 283 for five in 78 overs, trailing NZ's score by 82 runs.

Kohli looks set for Test century as he finished unbeaten on 93 from 174 balls, having hit 12 fours and a six. Dhoni started off positively before settling down to score 46 from 70 balls, with the help of five fours and two sixes.

The two batsmen have so far put on 104 runs in 27.3 overs for the sixth wicket to guide India out of trouble.

They scored 115 runs in 31 overs for the loss of one wicket in the final session.

New Zealand started with a bang with the ball but their pacers lost steam as the ball grew older. Southee was impressive as he claimed three for 35, while Bracewell took two for 66, including the wicket of Tendulkar.

Suresh Raina revived the Indian innings after they were reduced to 80 for four with a brisk half-century (55 from 90 balls).
