Timeline  Refresh

13:11
STUMPS - DAY 3

 India 369-5 (97 ovs) vs Aus 517-7d | Scorecard

Another day which belonged to the batsmen as India scored 369 runs in 97 overs, with a scoring rate of just under the four runs per over mark.

Captain Kohli led India's strong reply with a splendid knock of 115 from 84 balls, while Pujara (73), Rahane (62) and Vijay (53) also hit half-centuries.

Johnson was easily the best bowler for Australia as he managed to generate some extra bounce even on this wicket. He claimed two for 90 in 18 overs while Lyon troubled the Indians a great deal to take two for 103 in 30 overs.

If India can have another couple of good sessions with the bat on Day 4 they could well push past Australia's score and beyond. If India can manage to grab a lead of around 120-150 runs it would certainly make for an exciting contest on the fifth and final day with the pitch expected to offer some spin with some uneven bounce.

Kohli walks back after a splendid innings of 115 from 184 balls, having hit 12 fours in total to help India make a strong reply.

So out of nowhere Johnson has again produced a wicket, and this time it is the big scalp of Kohli.

Wriddhiman Saha, who last played a Test at this very venue in January 2012, is greeted by a quick bouncer from Johnson. Saha takes his eyes off the ball and looks to sway out of the line but is struck on the gloves. Two balls later he successfully manages to get out of the way of another short ball.

 India 365-4 (93 ovs) vs Aus 517-7d | Scorecard

Rohit offers no shot to one pitched outside the off-stump from Lyon and that is followed by a long appeal but umpire Ian Gould turns it down. Perhaps what saved Rohit was that the impact was way outside the off-stump. He sweeps the next ball to deep square leg for a single.

He attempts another sweep off the last ball but gets a top edge which goes over the keeper and falls safely.

Both Kohli and Rohit play the pull shot with some confidence against Johnson but get a single each.

Mitchell Marsh comes in to bowl with the second new ball ahead of Siddle. He plays his trademark flick through midwicket for a boundary to bring up his century, in some style, from 158 balls with the help of 12 fours.

Kohli is the third Indian to score a century on his captaincy debut after Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.

This is Kohli's second century at Adelaide and fourth overseas out of seven centuries overall in Tests.

 India 300-4 (79 ovs) vs Aus 517-7d | Scorecard

India would be disappointed that three of their four batsmen got to half-centuries but were unable to carry on. Kohli, who is batting on 74, would be hoping to push on and carry India forward.

With Rohit Sharma out in the middle, Australia take off Smith and bring back medium pacer Watson.

Rohit plays a shot you usually see in ODIs, trying to steer it to thirdman with an open face, but gets an edge which goes on the bounce to first slip.

He taps a full toss from Lyon through the covers for three runs before Kohli again finds the gap for one. Rohit comes down the track to Lyon and defends solidly and blocks out the last two deliveries to end the over.

Kohli plays a lovely straight drive which beats Watson on his follow through but it strikes the stumps at the other end to save some runs for Australia. He flicks the fifth ball to deep square leg to bring up India's 300, in the 79th over.
11:32   Rahane falls for 62, India lose 4th wicket
 India 294-4 (76 ovs) vs Aus 517-7d | Scorecard

Smith makes a good comeback with a tidy second over but India are still able to pick five singles from it before and the same number of runs come from his second over.

Lyon checks India's progress with the wicket of Rahane, who is caught by surprise as one bounces from the rough. Rahane gets hit on the gloves as the ball lobs for a simple catch for Watson at first slip. He played a superb innings of 62 from 76 balls, having hit 10 fours in total, and put on 101 runs from 25.5 overs for the fourth wicket with Kohli.

Australia introduce part-time leg-spinner Steven Smith to give the pacers a break before the second new ball, which is 10 overs away.

Three balls later he gets some width which he despatches between cover and point for another boundary before he defends the last ball. Harris fields the last ball on his follow through before throwing an angry glance towards the batsmen.

Kohli has middled 84 percent of 100 deliveries he has faced so far, proving that he has been in total control out in the middle.

Rahane continues to takes risks. He pulls a short ball from Siddle as Lyon at deep midwicket lunges forward but is unable to get to the ball which beats him and goes for a boundary.

He then plays the hook shot despite fielders being stationed at square leg, midwicket, deep square leg and deep midwicket. The ball falls perfectly in the gap to give Rahane a single.

Kohli then attempts to wristly pull a short ball fine but mishits it on the leg side and gets a single.

Rahane, however, is not holding back. He attempts another pull shot which falls short of the fielder at square leg.

Kohli hit six fours in 86 deliveries to reach the landmark, which should be a big boost for him.

He has been in control after the first delivery which struck him on the helmet and has made most of batting on a good flat wicket.
10:17   Kohli inches closer to half-century, India 223-3 at tea
TEA - DAY 3

 India 223-3 (61 ovs) vs Aus 517-7d | Scorecard

Finally, Rahane gets one off the middle as he plays a confident cover drive for a boundary, in the 57th over.

Johnson comes back for another spell shortly before the tea break. Rahane throws his bat at a wide delivery but misses as the Aussies appeal for caught behind but the umpires rightly turns it down. The next ball is a beauty as it slants across the right-hander, going past the edge of the bat as Rahane tries to poke at it.
