Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blasted an unbeaten 79 from 44 balls but Kings XI Punjab managed to pip Chennai Super Kings by four runs in Mohali on Sunday.

CSK needed 17 from the final over but Mohit Sharma delivered under pressure to help Punjab clinch a narrow victory.

Dhoni, batting a back injury, battled hard till the end as he hit 12 from the final over but his team fell just short.

Earlier, Chris Gayle hammered 66 off 33 balls and raced to his half-century off 22 balls, putting a 96-run opening partnership alongside the in-form K L Rahul (37 off 22), to power Punjab to 197 for seven.

Dhoni's movements may have been hampered by the injury to his back but there is no hampering his big hitting.

Mohit gifts him a full toss which he chips over midwicket but the fielder in the deep is slow to react and puts down a tough chance diving forward, while also giving away a four.

Singles from the next two balls before Dhoni clobbers the fourth ball over midwicket for a six and then takes one to bring up his fifty, from 34 balls.

Jadeja revives CSK's hopes further with a six off the last ball of the over from Mohit, which goes for 19 runs.

But the experienced Tye checks CSK's progress with the wicket of Jadeja in the next over, caught by Ashwin on the leg side for 19.

Dhoni though is not ready to give up as he hammers a length ball from Tye over midwicket for a six.

The next ball drops short as Dhoni ramps it over the short thirdman fielder for a four and then drives the next ball to long-off for two runs.

Dhoni swings the last ball over square leg for another six as CSK get 19 from the 19th over.

An unbelievable comeback from CSK, hitting 50 runs from the last three overs, all down to their captain MSD.

They need 17 runs from the last over for victory.

Ashwin to bowl his fourth and final over as he starts with two dot balls to Dhoni, who goes down on one knee and clobbers the third ball square on the leg side for a six followed by three singles.

Ashwin gives away nine in his final over to finish with one for 32 in four overs.

The task keeps getting difficult for CSK, who need 76 from five overs for victory.

Left-arm pacer Sran continues as Dhoni punches the first ball to sweeper cover for one and Jadeja is beaten by a wide yorker.

He bowls a wide before Jadeja gets the next on the leg side for two runs and the pacer gives another wide.

Jadeja miscues another pull shot for two runs and gets another couple from the last ball as he strokes a full toss through the covers.

CSK need a couple of big overs to bring the asking rate under control but so far Dhoni and Rayudu are resisting taking the attack to the bowlers.

They are content to milk spinner Mujeeb around the field for ones and twos, getting just seven from his third over.

CSK are 101 for three in 12 overs, needing 97 runs from eight overs for victory.

With the asking rate going over 12, one of the two batsmen needs to change gears and hit some boundaries in the next over or two.

Ashwin comes back into the attack and builds up the pressure, giving away six runs from his third over.

Pacer Sran comes back and he makes the mistake of dropping it short as Rayudu pulls it over square leg for a six.

He follows it up with a very slow ball as Rayudu is way too early into the shot and is completely deceived.

Rayudu strokes the next ball straight to Ashwin and sets for a quick runs before he is sent back. But Ashwin is quick to get to the ball and runs out Rayudu with a direct hit as the CSK right-hander walks back after scoring 49 from 35 balls.

A superb comeback from Bran as he bowls four dot balls in a row and ends up conceding six runs from the over.

The match is slipping away from CSK, who need 85 runs from six overs for victory.

Quick thinking from Ashwin as he brings on part-time spinner Yuvraj to send down a few overs with CSK looking to rebuild their innings.

Three singles from the first three balls before Dhoni strokes a boundary through the off-side followed by a wide and two singles to get 10 from the over.

After a good first over, Ashwin goes for runs in his second over. He bowls a full toss which Rayudu sweeps behind square for a four followed by two leg side wides and he then takes one.

Dhoni smashes the last ball through the off-side for a four to get 13 from the over.

Mujeeb comes back, replacing Yuvraj, who concedes 10 runs from his first over.

Mujeed sends down a quick over, giving away just four singles as Punjab look to build the pressure with some tight overs.

Tye, who has three overs in hand, comes back. Three singles from the first three balls before Rayudu hits the fourth ball for a much-needed four followed by two singles to pick up nine runs from the over.

CSK are 94 for three in 11 overs, needing another 104 from 54 balls.

Ashwin is unhappy with the decision and immediately asks for the DRS and rightly so as the ball hits the batsman on line and is going on to hit the stumps.

Umpire CK Nandan has to overturn his decision as Billings is given out leg before wicket for nine.

Watson gets off the mark with a single before Vijay picks up a leg bye followed by three more singles, to pick up nine from the first over.

Mohit Sharma will operate from the other end. He gives Watson some width, which the Australian hits over point for a four and then steers the next fine on the off-side for the same result.

Mohit foxes the veteran Australian with the slower ball as Watson looks to turn it on the leg side but gets a top edge and is caught at fine leg for 11.

Chris Gayle hammered a quickfire 33-ball 63 to propel Kings XI Punjab to a huge 197 for seven against Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

Gayle gave Punjab a flying start as he put on 96 runs from 48 balls for the opening wicket with KL Rahul, who slammed 37 from 22 balls.

Mayank Agarwal hit 30 from 19 balls to continue the momentum in the middle overs, while Karun Nair provided the flourish at the end as he stroked 29 from 17 balls.

Pacer Shardul Thakur comes into the attack. He gets an edge off the very first ball but it flies between the wicketkeeper and first slip for a four. How costly could this slip prove for CSK?

Shardul then drops short as Rahul pulls it for a boundary and Gayle slams the last ball past mid-on for the third four of the over as CSK race past 50 in the fifth over.

Chahar comes under heavy attack from Gayle. The tall West Indian clubs the second ball over long-on for a huge six and then clips the next ball square on the leg side for a four.

Gayle cutting loose as he punches the third ball past mid-off for a four and lofts the fifth ball over that fielder for a six.

Gayle has blasted his way to 46 from 21 balls, having hit six fours and three sixes, while Rahul has stroked 28 from 15 balls.

In the second match of the day, Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and elected to bowl against Kings XI Punjab.

The big news is that Chris Gayle has made it to the playing eleven as he replaces Marcus Stoinis, while pacer Barinder Sran comes in for Axar Patel.

For Chennai, veteran Suresh Raina misses out because of injury as Murali Vijay is picked in his place.

In the first match of the day, Rajasthan Royals outclassed Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 19 runs.

A single to Kohli before de Kock punches the last ball through the off-side for his first boundary.

Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat comes into the attack in place of Kulkarni, who is taken off after an expensive first over.

Kohli collects a single before de Kock clips the second ball through midwicket for two runs. The third ball is pitched right up as Unadkat hammers it down the ground for a four followed by two singles.

Gowtham continues as RCB get three singles from the first three balls before de Kock comes down and plays the inside out lofted shot for a four and he sweeps the next ball for the same result.

Ben Stokes comes into the attack as Kohli clips the first ball over midwicket for a four. A single each to the two batsmen before Kohli turns the fourth ball on the leg side for two runs and then drives a full toss square on the off-side for a four.

Stokes bowls a wide before Kohli punches the last ball past point for two runs as 15 come from the over.

RCB have bounced back after the early wicket to reach 64 for one in six overs with Kohli on 36 from 19 balls and de Kock on 23 from 13 balls.

Brendon McCullum and Quinton de Kock to open the batting for RCB, while Krishnappa Gowtham will take the new ball for Royals.

The first ball is punched in the covers by McCullum but Samson, who played a fantastic knock with the bat, lets one go through his legs to gift RCB a four.

Two dot balls before McCullum pulls the next ball powerfully but straight into the hands of Ben Stokes at deep midwicket, who does well to take a sharp catch flying over his head, timing his jump to perfection.

Virat Kohli gets off the mark with a single from the last ball as Gowtham makes the perfect start with the ball.

With a huge target to chase, Kohli wastes no time in looking to get after the bowlers.

Pacer Dhawal Kulkarni's first ball is driven through the covers for a boundary before he repeats the shot two balls later for another boundary.

Umesh drops short and Tripathi is quick to rock back and pull it over square leg for a four to take Rajasthan past the 200-run mark.

Umesh oversteps to gift Rajasthan a free hit as Tripathi clips it through midwicket for a single.

Samson makes most of the free hit delivery as he sends it flying back over the bowler's head for a straight six to take his score into the 80s.

Umesh spraying it all over, this time he gifts Samson some width and the young right-hander lofts it over the covers for another six and ends the innings with a single from the last ball.

Samson finishes unbeaten on a splendid innings of 92 from 45 balls, hitting 10 sixes and two fours, while Tripathi hit 14 from five balls as Rajasthan post a huge 217 for four in their 20 overs.

Umesh was hit for 27 runs in the final over, with RCB struggling to contain the flow of the runs at the end, giving away 88 from the last five overs.

Samson turns Khelroliya through midwicket for two runs followed by two singles.

Samson then attacks the left-arm pacer with back to back sixes straight down the ground to get 16 runs from the 18th over.

Samson has changed gears quite efficiently, smashing his way to 65 from 39 balls, while Buttler has stroked 21 from 12 balls.

Woakes checks Rajasthan's progress with the wicket of Buttler, who hits a low full toss straight into the hands of Kohli at mid-off to perish for 23.

Samson continues to deal in sixes. A slower ball from Woakes is hit straight down the ground, over long-on for a six, his eighth of the innings.

The next ball is steered last, fine past the wicketkeeper as he opens the face of the bat at the last minute for a four.

Samson slashes at the last ball as the fielder at sweeper cover dives forward but is unable to take the catch and also ends up giving away a four.

Rajasthan are looking good for a 200-plus total as they reach 190 for four in 19 overs.

Woakes comes back as Samson picks the second ball and deposits it over the square leg boundary for a six. He has not hit a single four so far, hitting 48 from 32 balls with the help of five sixes.

Woakes quick to adjust his length, bowling three yorkers in a row. Samson, meanwhile, brings up his half-century from just 34 balls with a single on the off-side.

Stokes warming up nicely as he cuts a short ball from Khejroliya for a four past point. The next ball is clipped behind square on the leg side for a six as the visitors start to lift the tempo in the middle overs.

Stokes flicks the last ball square on the leg side as Woakes does well on the boundary to stop the boundary and keep it down to two.

Rajasthan get 15 from the over to go past the 100-run mark, in the 12th over.

Chahal checks Rajasthan's progress as he grabs the key wicket of Stokes. The left-hander looks to sweep it from outside the off-stump but only manages the inside edge to be bowled for 27 from 21 balls.

Jos Buttler gets off the mark in spectacular fashion. He reverse sweeps the first ball he faces, from Chahal, through the vacant thirdman region for a four.

Two singles before Buttler attempts the paddle sweep but misses and even the wicketkeeper goes down the leg side as it goes straight through between the keeper and the slip fielder for four byes.

Rahane's leg injury is hampering his running between the wickets and he is looking to hit as many boundaries as possible in the Powerplay and avoid taking singles.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal comes into the attack. Short content to take singles as he picks one on the leg side before Rahane sweeps Chahal uppishly over square leg for a four and then takes a single.

Short misses the short ball as he can't beat the fielder in the covers but he lofts the last ball back over Chahal's head for a four.

Woakes comes back as Rahane goes hard at the first ball but only for a single to the man in the deep on the off-side.

Short pulls the next ball powerfully but Mandeep Singh's outstanding diving effort at deep square leg saves the boundary and keeps it down to just a single.

Woakes tries the slower ball but Rahane is able to pick it up early as he lofts it behind square on the leg side for a four.

But Woakes gets revenge off the very next delivery as Rahane looks to loft it straight but holes out to Umesh at mid-on. It was again the slower ball as Rahane got it off the toe end of the bat.

"Batting second is an advantage especially on this ground where one partnership can get you through," says Kohli about his decision.

Welcome to the coverage of the 11th match of the Indian Premier League between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Both teams will be keen to continue the momentum, having won their previous matches after starting the tournament with losses.

RCB are placed fifth and Royals sixth on the points table with two points each, with both teams having won their last games after starting the tournament with defeats.

They had lost their opening games to Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.

RCB notched up their first victory of the season, riding on South African star AB de Villiers' brilliant half-century to beat Kings XI Punjab by four wickets.

RR celebrated their return to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium with a 10-run win over Delhi Daredevils in the rain-hit match, getting past a revised target of 71 runs in six overs as per the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Captain Virat Kohli, who has 52 runs under his belt so far, will be itching to make a mark by getting a big knock.

Brendon McCullum also would like to get into the thick of things, especially after getting a golden duck.

Ben Stokes, the most-expensive signing at the IPL Player Auction 2018, hasn't been in the best of batting form recently, but RR will hope he can start hitting a few balls out of the park soon. He has just managed 21 runs in two games.
