STUMPS - DAY 1

India 344-3 (90 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard


Sri Lanka strike very late in the day with the wicket of Rahane, who is given leg before wicket off Herath for 100. He went back to defend but got a big inside edge on to his pads and umpire Bruce Oxenford has to reverse his decision.

Perera gets one to bounce more than expected as Rahane is struck on the gloves but he manages to keep it down, fending it on the leg side.

Herath to bowl the final over of the day. Rahane slaps the third ball through the covers for a single before Pujara is struck on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down. He clips the last ball through the leg side for two runs as India finish the day on a strong 344 for three in 90 overs at stumps.

A day dominated by the Indians as they score 106 runs in the post-tea session without losing any wickets.

Pujara finished unbeaten on a splendid innings of 128, while Rahane hit 103 with the duo involved in an unbroken stand of 211 for the fourth wicket to put India in control.

Rahane plays another delightful cover drive off Herath as the spinner overpitches for a boundary.

However, he attempts the sweep off the next ball but is beaten and hit on the pads. The Sri Lankans go up in appeal but umpire turns it down as the Sri Lankans take the DRS, with four deliveries left before their reviews are topped up.

The impact is well outside the off-stump and the original decision of not out stays. A single to Pujara off the last ball takes India to 317 for three after 80 overs with Pujara on 119 and Rahane on 88, with the partnership growing to 184 runs.

Sri Lanka straightaway take the second new ball as they bring back pacer Pradeep. Pujara steers the first ball to thirdman for one and Rahane clips the third ball on the leg side for a single.

Disaster for Sri Lanka as Pradeep walks back with some kind of hamstring injury after bowling just four balls with the second new ball. Pushapkumara continues the over as Pujara turns the fifth ball through midwicket for two runs.

Herath continues from the other end as India pick three easy singles from his 20th over.

Pushpakumara continues to disappoint as he bowls another long hop and Rahane pulls it through midwicket and then takes a single to take his score to 96 and just a hit away from his century.

A single to Rahane off Perera brings up the 200-run stand between the duo for the fourth wicket. The last ball bounces sharply and goes down the leg side as wicketkeeper Dickwella struggles to stop it to give away three byes.

Rahane completes his century with a quick single on the off-side from 150 balls, having hit 12 fours.

Pushpakumara has been disappointing and has bowled a lot of loose deliveries during his spell of 14 overs, giving away 59 runs.

Once again he drops short as Rahane punches the last ball through the covers for a four.

Spin from both ends now as Dhananjaya de Silva comes back. Pujara turns the first ball to deep midwicket for one and Rahane drives the third ball to long-on for a single.

De Silva gets one to bounce more than expected but Rahane is able to get on top of the bounce and steers it to thirdman for two runs.

A single to Pujara off Pushpakumara raises the 150-run stand for the fourth wicket from just 197 deliveries as India pile on the runs.

Rahane keen to continue his positive approach against the spinners. He gives de Silva the charge and lofts him back over his head for a four.

In the next over, he cuts a short ball from Herath for a four as the veteran spinner drops short.

A single to Pujara off de Silva brings up India's 300, in the 77th over.

Rahane, on 80, gets a lifeline as as the bowler Pushapkumara drops a sharp chance on his follow through despite a full length dive to his left.

Pace bowler Pradeep comes back into the attack. The first three balls are defended by Rahane, who is standing outside his crease, drills a full delivery through the covers for a four and then picks a single.

Meanwhile, Pujara clips Pushpakumara for two runs to complete his 13th century from 164 balls to celebrate his landmark 50th Test match in some style.

This is the third century in a row for Pujara against Sri Lanka and his sixth in the last 13 matches as he continues his golden run with the bat.

The last ball is short and Pujara is quick to pull it through square leg for a four to maintain the momentum for the Indians.

Off-spinner Perera to resume proceedings after the break. Pujara chips down and clips the third ball to midwicket for one to take his score to 90 before Rahane defends the last three balls.

Spin from both ends as left-armer Pushpakumara, who has conceded 40 runs in eight overs, comes in from the other end.

Pujara takes another quick single on the leg side before Rahane takes one from the last ball to retain strike.

Sri Lanka looking to stop the flow of runs in the post-tea session and build the pressure with some disciplined bowling.

However, Perera errs as he bowls a loose delivery as Rahane pulls a short ball through square leg for a four and then takes a single.

Perera oversteps to give away a no ball as Pujara picks two runs on the leg side and gets one from the next ball.

A single to Rahane in the next over brings up his half-century from 83 balls to take the total to 254 for three in 64 overs.

TEA BREAK - DAY 1

India go into the tea break on 238 for three in 58 overs, having scored 134 runs in 29 overs in the post-lunch session.

Sri Lanka started strongly with the wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli before Rahane and Pujara's aggressive partnership turned the tide back in India's favour.

Pujara hit a solid 89 from 140 balls to inch closer to his second century in as many matches. Rahane hit a fluent 41 as the duo put on a quick stand of 105 runs from 115 balls for the fourth wicket to put India in control.

Earlier, Rahul was unfortunately run out for 57 after a mix up with Pujara, while Kohli was caught at slip off Herath after scoring just 13.

Sri Lanka's bowlers were poor and bowled a lot of loose deliveries as India managed to score at over four runs per over.

Off-spinner Dhanajaya de Silva comes into the attack. A single to Rahane brings up India's 200, in the 51st over.

In the next over, the right-hander takes a couple of steps down and plays a sweetly timed drive through the covers off Perera for a four.

Pujara has also picked up scoring rate in the last half an hour or so. Following three singles in the over, Pujara uses his feet and flicks de Silva through midwicket for a four and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Herath comes back, replacing Perera. The second ball is short and wide as Pujara cuts it past point for a four. A single each to the two batsmen before Pujara slaps another short ball through the covers for a four to take his score into the 80s.

Pacer Nuwan Pradeep comes into the attack but no stopping the flow as India pick up five from his over.

Change of ends for Herath as he takes over from de Silva. A single to Pujara brings up the 100-run stand for the fourth wicket with Rahane from just 104 balls as India continue to dominate with the bat.

Pujara is inching closer to another hundred, having hit 88 from 139 balls, while Rahane has made 39 from 55 balls.

Rahane hits a short ball from Herath through midwicket to get off the mark with a four.

In the next over, Pujara drives Perera through the covers for another four before he cuts a short ball for two runs to bring up his 4000 runs in Test cricket in his 50th match.

Left-arm spinner Pushpakumara comes back, to replace Herath. Rahane gets a single from the first ball before Pujara cuts a short ball past point for a four.

In the next over, Pujara gets an edge which falls short and goes past Mathews at slip to get him three runs. Pujara then comes down the track and drives it straight for one and Rahane keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Rahane looking to be positive as he chips down and hammers Pushpakumara straight down the ground past mid-on for a four. He again uses his feet as he heaves Perera over the vacant midwicket region for another boundary.

Pujara also uses his feet well as he flicks Pushpakumara through midwicket for three runs to inch closer to his fifty.

The last ball is short and Pujara is quick to rock back and pull it through midwicket for another four as he races to 21 from 23 balls.

A single to Pujara off Perera helps him complete his fifty in his 50th Test match, from 112 balls. He then drives the off-spinner through the vacant cover region for a couple and turns the next square on the leg side for two more runs.

Debutant Pushpakumara drops one short as Pujara pulls it high over midwicket fence for a six despite a fielder being placed in the deep he went with the shot.

The runs are quite coming freely now. Perera drops one short as Pujara rocks back and punches it through the covers for a four and then drives the next ball to long-on for one.

Three more singles as India reach 199 for three in 50 overs, scoring at nearly four runs per over.

Pujara has lifted his scoring since to getting to the fifty, scoring 67 from 122 balls, while Rahane has made 25.

India 133-3 (39 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

With Virat Kohli out in the middle, Sri Lanka bring back pacer Nuwan Pradeep possibly to test him with a few short balls, which have troubled him lately.

However, he bowls it slightly fuller to Kohli and on the pads as he turns it on the leg side for three runs to get off the mark.

In the next over, Pujara sweeps Herath for a boundary square on the leg side. The two batsmen have a slight misunderstanding over a possible single as Pujara does well to send back Kohli quickly.

Pradeep tries a bouncer to Kohli who leaves it alone before he drives a full delivery down the ground for a four and then takes a run.

Another partnership starting to develop as India reach 125 for two.

But Sri Lanka strike back with the key wicket of captain Virat Kohli for 13. The right-hander went for the cut shot against Herath but got an edge and Mathews took a splendid catch at slip.

Herath resumes proceedings after the lunch break. The field is well spread out for Rahul, who easily picks a single to long-on off the second ball before Pujara cautiously defends the rest of the over.

Perera from the other end. Rahul takes a single from the first ball before Pujara flicks the next ball through midwicket for three runs to raise the 50-run stand for the second wicket from 115 balls.

Perera gets one to hold it's line as Rahul defends but gets an edge for a single on the off-side. Pujara comes down the track to the last ball but can't find the gap as the bowler reacts well to stop the ball on his follow through.

Against the run of play, Sri Lanka strike with the wicket of Rahul, who is run out for 57. He taps Herath on the off-side and sets off for a quick run and is sent back halfway down the track after Pujara responds initially but then refuses the run. No chance for Rahul to get back to his crease as the fielder on the off-side swoops in quickly to effect the run out and get the second wicket for Sri Lanka.

LUNCH - DAY 1

India 101-1 (28 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

A good innings from KL Rahul on his comeback as he hit a fluent 52 from 73 balls to guide India to 101 for one in 28 overs at the lunch break on Day 1.

Electing to bat, India made a fiery start as the openers raced to the 50-run mark.

The in-form Shikhar Dhawan stroked his way to 35 from 37 balls, before he was trapped leg before wicket by Dilruwan Perera.

Pujara, who hit a century in the first match, adopted a cautious approach and was unbeaten on 14 from 58 balls at the break.

Earlier, Rahul was drafted back into the Indian team in place of Abhinav Mukund.

Sri Lanka went into the match with three spinners, while fielding just one pace bowler on a pitch which looks quite dry and is already giving the spinners some assistance.

LUNCH - DAY 1

India 101-1 (28 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

Pujara looks to defend Herath but gets a slight inside edge as the ball goes fine and evades the dive from the fielder at short leg.

Herath has settled into a good rhythm spell in his second spell and is not only checked the flow of runs but also creating a few chances.

He nearly claims Rahul's wicket as he drags the right-hander out with a well flighted delivery before getting it to turn enough to beat the edge as wicketkeeper Dickwella effects a quick stumping. The decision is referred upstairs but Rahul's feet are back in the crease in time as India survive a close call.

He jumps down the track to the next ball to Herath and plays the inside out lofted shot for a four to bring up his fifty in grand style from 72 balls, and also register his sixth half-century in a row in Tests.

That boundary also takes India past the 100-run mark, in the 27th over.

Perera drops short as Pujara hits it square on the off-side for a couple before he drives the next ball straight down the ground past mid-on for a four.

Rahul looks to maintain the tempo after Dhawan's dismissal. He comes down the track to Pushpakumara and plays the inside out cover drive to perfection along the ground for a four to take his score to 32.

Left-arm spinners from both ends as Herath comes back in place of Perera. He concedes three singles in his first over with both batsmen again looking to be positive again the left-arm spinner and not let him settle down.

Meanwhile, Pushapkumara drops one short as Rahul rocks back and pulls it through midwicket for a four.

India continue to put pressure on Herath as he plays the sweep for a boundary over midwicket to take his score into the 40s.

In the next over, Pujara misses out on a boundary as he pulls a short ball from Pushpakumara but hits it straight into the fielder at short leg. Mendis is hit on the helmet as Pujara plays a powerful shot and must be ruing missing out on some runs.

Herath produces a beauty to beat Pujara, who has a hesitant poke and watches it spin past the outside edge.

Four overs for debutant Pushpakumara in his first spell before he makes way for Pradeep. He bowls a tidy over to keep Rahul tied down for a maiden over.

Sri Lanka have managed to bring things under control since Dhawan's departure conceding just 32 runs in 10 overs.

India though will be happy with their progress, having reached 95 for one in 24 overs, with Pujara on 46 and Pujara on 14.

Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera comes into the attack in place of pacer Pradeep, who bowled five overs for 29 runs.

He strikes with his very first delivery with the key wicket of the in-form Dhawan, who is trapped leg before wicket after scoring 35 from 37 balls.

Dhawan went for the sweep but missed and was hit on the pads but the on-field umpire turned down the appeal. Sri Lanka immediately took the review which showed that the impact was low and the ball would have go on to hit the stumps, as the original decision had to be overturned.

Cheteshwar Pujara gets off the mark with a single before Rahul picks one from the fifth ball.

Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara comes into the attack. He makes a tidy start as Rahul picks a single for the only run of the over.

At the first drinks break on Day 1, India have reach 63 for one in 14 overs with Rahul looking good on 26, while Pujara is on two.

After conceding a flurry of boundaries, a defensive Sri Lanka make a change in the bowling as part-time medium pacer Dimuth Karunaratne replace Herath, who was hit for 19 runs in his three overs.

Rahul drives the third ball through the covers for three runs before Dhawan takes a single.

Pradeep again makes the mistake of offering Dhawan some width who again plays a cracking cover drive for a four. The next ball is short as Dhawan pulls it to the fielder at deep square leg for one.

Pradeep then bowls a full delivery as Rahul glances it fine for a four to take India past the 50-run mark in the ninth over before he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

The move to bring in part-timer Karunaratne seems to have worked. Rahul (19) is beaten by the incoming delivery as the umpire rules it out leg before wicket.

He decides to take the review which shows the ball was doing too much and would have misses the leg stump which means Rahul survives.

Four singles from the over as India race to 56 for no loss in 10 overs with Dhawan on 35 from 36 balls and Rahul on 21 from 24 balls.

Rahul comes down the track to Herath but gets an inside edge on the leg side. He then cuts a short ball but the fielder at point does well to put in the dive and save some runs. He defends the last two balls to see off a maiden over from Herath.

Pradeep tries a short ball to Dhawan, who easily pulls it square on the leg side for a four to continue his positive start.

There is a huge appeal for LBW off the last ball against Rahul but the right-hander got an inside edge off a full delivery from Pradeep.

Rahul gets his first boundary as he cuts a short ball from Herath past point for a four. He drives the next ball on the off-side but the fielder at mid-off slips and gives away another four.

Dhawan looking in ominous touch as far as Sri Lanka are concerned. A slightly wide delivery from Pradeep is hammered through the covers for a four by the left-hander as he races to 25 from 23 balls, having hit four fours and a six already.

The fifth ball is again driven through the covers but this time only for a couple. He looks to flick the last ball across the line on the leg side but misses as Pradeep appeals for leg before wicket but umpire turns it down.

India off to a quick start as they race to 38 for no loss in seven overs with Dhawan on 27 and Rahul on 11.

India 18-0 (3 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

Nuwan Pradeep to open the bowling for Sri Lanka. Shikhar Dhawan lets the first three balls go through before he looks to steers one to thirdman but can't find the gap.

Dhawan edges the last ball of the over but it flies past the fielder at third slip for a four to get India off the mark.

Spin from the other end straightaway as Rangana Herath takes the new ball. KL Rahul gets an inside edge off the first ball for a couple on the leg side before he takes one.

Dhawan gets another edge but if falls short before he comes down the track and lofts Herath back over his head for a six. In the last match too, Dhawan was severe on the left-arm spinner and here again he is looking to be positive.

He keeps strike with a single from the last ball with an easy run to long-on.

Dhawan looks to cut a short ball from Pradeep but it stays low, beating the left-hander. However, he gets the next ball perfectly in the gap for a boundary as India race to 18 for no loss in three overs.

India captain Virat Kohli has won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in the second Test match.

As expected a fit-again KL Rahul returns to the team in place of Abhinav Mukund, who is dropped despite scoring a half-century in the second innings of the first Test.

For Sri Lanka, Dinesh Chandimal has also recovered from illness and returns to lead the side for a must-win game for the hosts.

Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara makes his debut for Sri Lanka, while all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva also returns to the team.

09:29   Rahul set to return as India look to seal series
Welcome to the coverage of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Thursday.

India captain Virat Kohli has confirmed that fit-again opening batsman KL Rahul will return to the side for the second Test against Sri Lanka, with Abhinav Mukund likely to lose his spot.

Rahul was ruled out of the first Test in Galle, where India won by 304 runs, with a viral fever but the 25-year-old has recovered sufficiently and has been batting in the nets.

India were without both their first choice openers in Galle, with Murali Vijay also unavailable due to injury.

Shikhar Dhawan, who was named in the squad as a replacement for Vijay, and Mukund opened for the tourists, who eased to a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

While Dhawan put India in the driver's seat on the opening day with a sparkling 190 off just 168 deliveries, it was Mukund's turn to shine in the second innings with an 81.
