August 13, 2017

17:47  SL 19-1 at stumps after India enforce follow-on:

SL 19-1 (13 ovs) and 135 vs India 487 | Scorecard

Another disappointing batting performance by Sri Lanka as they are reduced to 19 for one in 13 overs, after being forced to follow-on.

They were bowled out for a lowly 135 in the first innings after India had posted a mammoth 487 in their first innings.

Sri Lanka still need another 333 runs to avoid the humiliation of an innings defeat with three more days left in the match.

India are sitting pretty and would be looking to push for victory on the third day itself and complete an emphatic 3-0 series whitewash.

SL 19-1 (13 ovs) 135 vs India 487 | Scorecard

We will have Yadavs from both ends now as Kuldeep comes into the attack for the time in the second innings.

Karunaratne is nearly done in as he looks to play the cut but the ball is too close and he somehow manages to keep it out.

The fifth ball is slightly short and the left-hander punches it through the covers for a four.

Ashwin to bowl the final over of the day. Pushpakumara plays with utmost caution to keep out the senior off-spinner and end the day without any more dramas.
17:26  Umesh strikes, SL lose early wicket:

SL 15-1 (11 ovs) 135 vs India 487 | Scorecard

Good signs for India as Umesh comes back into the attack, having earlier gone off the field with some injury.

He seems in no discomfort as he bowls a good first over with Tharanga getting just a single.

Ashwin continues but still no signs of Kuldeep, who took four wickets in Sri Lanka's first innings.

It is Umesh, who makes breakthrough with the wicket of Tharanga, who drags one back to his stumps. The left-hander is bowled for a paltry seven to continue his run of poor scores in the series.

Tharanga plays away from his body without any feet movement as he tries to force it through the off-side but ends up inside edging it back on to his stumps to be dismissed twice in the space of four hours.

Malinda Pushpakumara comes in at No. 3 as the nightwatchman. He gets a beauty from Umesh as the ball moves away late to leave the right-hander, who was playing down the inside line.
17:18  SL bowled out for 135, India enforce follow-on:

SL 11-0 (8 ovs) 135 vs India 487 | Scorecard

Sri Lanka's openers, Karunaratne and Tharanga, walk out to open the batting for the second time in two sessions.

Mohammed Shami opens the bowling as Karuaratne clips the first ball on the leg side for two runs to get off the mark. He flicks the next ball through midwicket for a four before he is rapped on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down.

Ravichandran Ashwin to open the bowling from the other end, that could be considering two left-handers out in the middle.

Tharanga defends the first five balls before he drives the last ball through the off-side for a four to get off the mark in confident fashion.

Shami once again asking questions. This time he bowls a bouncer as Karunaratne ducks under but the ball stays low and hits him around the upper back and shoulder area. He looks in considerable pain as the physio comes out to provide some treatment following which he continues to bat.

Sri Lanka's openers looking to bat cautiously and not give any chances to India's bowlers and avoid losing any wickets before stumps.

Sri Lanka following on crawl their way to 11 for no loss in eight overs, with four of the last five overs being maidens.
16:40  SL bowled out for 135, India enforce follow-on:

SL 135-all out (37.4 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Ashwin finishes off Sri Lanka's innings with the wicket of Sandakan, who is bowled for 10.

The hosts are bowled out for a lowly 135 in 37.4 overs as they fail to last even two sessions.

And India have enforced the follow-on for the second match in a row, having taken a huge 352-run first innings lead.

The young Kuldeep, who came into the team only because of Jadeja's suspension, leads the way with superb figures of four for 40, while Ashwin picked up for two for 22.

Shami triggered the collapse with a two-wicket burst with the new ball, while Pandya picked up one wicket.

16:32  Kuldeep claims 4th wicket, SL 9 down:

SL 135-9 (37 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Pushpakumara literally gifts his wicket away to the Indians. He comes down the track and has a wild swing but misses it completely and is bowled for 10.

Sandakan goes after Ashwin as he comes down and lofts the off-spinner over mid-on for a four. Three balls later, he chips Ashwin over mid-off for the same result to get two boundaries in the over.

Kuldeep gets Fernando to edge one but it falls short of Ajinkya Rahane in the slips. He is beaten again off the next ball, this time off the inside edge.

Fernando's misery finally ends as Kuldeep bowls him through the gate off the pads to claim his fourth wicket of the innings.
16:15  Chandimal out for 48, SL lose 7th wkt:

SL 125-7 (32 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Umesh, who bowled just three overs with the new ball, comes back for a new spell. But after bowling just one delivery he pulls up with some injury and has to leave the field for treatment and Shami has to complete the over.

Kuldeep strikes again in his next over with the wicket of Dilruwan Perera for a duck. The right-hander pulls a short ball straight into the hands of Pandya at deep midwicket, the only fielder in the deep on the leg side.

Kuldeep's success forces Kohli to bring back Ashwin from the other end. Malinda Pushpakumara comes down the track but is beaten by the turn and hit on the pads. He inside edges the next ball but it falls short of the fielder at short leg before there is a slight appeal for LBW.

Kuldeep beats Pushpakumara with the googly which goes straight on as the right-hander plays for the turn.

The young spinner switches to round the wicket and beats the No. 8 batsman with another googly. He turns the last ball to fine leg but Chandimal turns down the single.

India waste their second and final review. Chandimal goes for the sweep against Ashwin but fails to make connection as the Indians appeal for a catch down the leg side. India take the DRS but there is no contact with the bat and they finish both their review after just 26 overs.

Pushpakumara has had enough of the defending as he goes back and cuts Ashwin past point for a four. In his next over, he has a huge appeal for leg before wicket turned down against Chandimal.

However, Ashwin gets his man in the very next over. The Sri Lankan captain flicks Ashwin straight to Rahul at leg slip to be dismissed for 48 as the hosts slip to 125 for seven in the 32nd over.

Lakshan Sandakan, who earlier claimed five wickets with the ball, comes out to bat with his team in dire straits.
15:40  Dickwella stumped for 29, SL 5 down:

SL 101-5 (21 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Kuldeep to start off proceedings in the post-tea session. Dickwella taps the third ball to point for a single before Chandimal is beaten by the googly which goes straight on.

It is Hardik from the other end. Dickwella picks another single on the off-side before Chandimal plays a nice cover drive for two runs. He chases the last ball which is wide but ends up getting beaten.

Chandimal goes after the young Kuldeep as he cuts a short ball through the off-side for a four. The next ball is pitched right up as Chandimal smashes it through the covers for a four and two balls later he slams it straight down the ground for the third four of the over.

Dickwella goes after Pandya as he smashes the fast bowler over mid-on for a four and Chandimal drives the last ball for a four through covers as Sri Lanka reach 99 for four in 20 overs.

Kuldeep strikes with the wicket of the aggressive Dickwella who comes down the track but is beaten and is stumped after scoring 29. The googly completely deceived the left-hander who had charged down a long way as the ball went in between the bat and pads and wicketkeeper Saha completed an easy stumping.

14:45  SL in trouble after early wickets, India in control:

SL 61-4 (14 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

It has been India all the way on Day 2. After posing 487 in their first innings courtesy of Pandya's attacking century, India have claimed a few early wickets to reduce Sri Lanka to 61 for four.

Shami was excellent with the new ball, claiming two for 15, dismissing both the openers.

Pandya followed up with 96-ball 108 with the wicket of Mathews for a duck, while the in-form Mendis was run out for 18.

A few early wickets after the tea break could see Sri Lanka getting bowled out for a low score in their first innings and staring at another huge defeat.

SL 61-4 (14 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Dickwella plays a good cover drive for three runs off Shami, who is into the sixth over of his first spell.

Pandya strikes Dickwella on the pads but the ball pitched well outside the leg stump. He struggles with his line, bowling it full on the pads and Dickwella is content to defend.

With around eight minutes to go for tea, India introduce chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Chandimal looks to sweep but is beaten before he connects with the next ball for a boundary to bring up Sri Lanka's 50, in the 13th over.

Ravichandran Ashwin comes on from the other end. Dickwella not holding back as he sweeps India's premier spinner for a boundary through the leg side and then gets a single off an inside edge.

At tea on Day 2, Sri Lanka are struggling on 61 for four in 14 overs with Chandimal on 13 and Dickwella on 14.
14:24  Mathews and Mendis perish as SL collapse:

SL 42-4 (10 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Things go from bad to worse for Sri Lanka. Pandya cripples the hosts further with the key wicket of the experienced Angelo Mathews who plays back to a full incoming delivery and is trapped leg before wicket for a duck.

Mathews didn't review the call and rightly so with the ball hitting him in line and going on to hit the leg stump.

Sri Lanka in complete tatters on 38 for four in the 10th over.

Niroshan Dickwella gets off the mark with a cracking cover drive for a boundary as he makes his intent clear right at the start.
14:19  Mendis run out for 18, SL in trouble:

SL 38-3 (9 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Umesh nearly picks a wicket as he beats Mendis with a full delivery which swings away. But the last ball is on the pads as Mendis lofts it over square leg for a four.

India's hero with the bat, Hardik Pandya comes into the attack after Umesh is taken off after just three overs.

Mendis continues to find the boundaries on the leg side as he clips Pandya's full delivery from around off-stump.

In the next over, Chandimal plays a nice straight drive, punching a full delivery from Shami down the ground for a four to get off the mark.

However, disaster strikes for Sri Lanka as the in-form Mendis is run out for 18. Chandimal had flicked a full delivery from Shami on the leg side as Ashwin made a diving stop with the two batsmen involved in a mix-up. Ashwin misses with the direct hit as the batsman was well outside his crease and the back up fielder Kuldeep had enough time to make another attempt and he connected with the direct hit to run out Mendis.
13:56  Shami's double strike rocks Sri Lanka:

SL 23-2 (5 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Mendis has a close shave as he comes a long way looking for the single before the batsman Karunaratne sends him back. Luckily the fielder at point missed the direct hit else Mendis would have been run out.

However, two balls later he plays a beautiful flick through the leg side for a four to get off the mark in style. The pacer slides down the pads again and the result is the same as Mendis bags another boundary.

Shami strikes again in his next over as he sends back the other opener. Late movement for Shami as Karunaratne is forced to play at it before the ball moves away to take the edge.

Shami on fire as he dismisses both the Sri Lankan openers to reduce the hosts to 23 for two in the fifth over.

Dinesh Chandimal is beaten by a full incoming delivery from Shami as the appeal for LBW is turned down. And Virat Kohli decides to take the DRS with the batsman struck on the crease while being hit on the pads.

The ball is clipping the bails which means the batsman survives just about because of umpire's call. A close call for Chandimal and Sri Lanka, who are struggling against the new ball.
13:46  Sri Lanka lose early wicket after India post 487:

SL 14-1 (3 ovs) vs India 487 | Scorecard

Mohammed Shami to open the bowling for India and facing him are the two left-handed opening duo of Sri Lanka -- the in-form Dimuth Karunaratne and the struggling Upul Tharanga.

Shami nearly does for Karunaratne with the incoming delivery but he is lucky to get an inside edge on it with the ball shaping to hit the middle stump.

The left-hander clips the fifth ball on the leg side for a couple to get Sri Lanka off the mark.

Umesh Yadav from the other end. A single each to the two batsmen before Tharanga drives on the up for a beautiful boundary through the cover region. The next ball swings away a lot as wicketkeeper Saha struggles to stop to give away five wides.

Shami strikes in his second over with the wicket of Tharanga for five. A half-hearted poke without any feet movement as the left-hander got an edge and was caught by wicketkeeper Saha. However, Sri Lanka openers after a small discussion take the surprise the decision to review the decision but the UltraEdge shows there was an clear edge.

India 401-8 (111 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

He came forward to defend but the ball spun enough to take the edge but Kuldeep also ended up wasting a review as he immediately decided to take the DRS.

However, the replays showed that it was a clear outside edge as India ended up losing their eighth wicket.

The Kuldeep-Pandya eighth wicket stand of 62 runs helped India get past the 400-run mark.

India 400-7 (110 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

Spin introduced straightaway after the drinks break as chinaman spinner Lakshan Sandakan comes into the attack. Both batsmen look quite comfortable as they pick three singles in the over. Kuldeep survives a leg before shout off the last ball as he looks to defend but is beaten by one which comes in sharply. The impact looks to be outside the off-stump and that probably saves Kuldeep.

Lahiru comes back for another spell, his second spell on Day 2. He hits Kuldeep on the pads as the left-hander looks to flick but misses and the leg before appeal is rejected. Two singles and a leg bye in the over as India slowly but steadily inch their way to the 400-run mark.

India 329-6 (90 ovs) vs SL | Scorecard

India reached the close of play on 329 for six, with Wriddhiman Saha unbeaten on 13 and Hardik Pandya not out on one at stumps. They will be hoping that their lower order which has done well with the bat in the last year or so, will once again make some contributions with the bat and carry them above the 400-run mark.

On Day 1, India's Shikhar Dhawan smashed his sixth hundred and added 188 in an opening partnership with KL Rahul before Sri Lanka's spinners fought back to halt the touring side's progress.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, India captain Virat Kohli could not have asked for a better start as his side began their bid to complete a series whitewash over the hosts.

Dhawan hit 17 fours in his 123-ball knock before he was out for 119, hitting a sweep shot off left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara straight to Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal at square leg.

Pushpakumara had also provided Sri Lanka a breakthrough in his first over when he dismissed Rahul for 85. The 30-year-old, playing only his second test, later bowled an out-of-sorts Ajinkya Rahane for 17, to end the day with figures of 3-40.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Lakshan Sandakan then got Cheteshwar Pujara (eight) to edge one to slip as Sri Lanka continued to fight back.

The 26-year-old, replacing the injured Rangana Herath, also removed the dangerous Kohli with the right-handed batsman out for 42 after getting an edge to slip.

Ravichandran Ashwin (31) was the only wicket to fall to the faster bowlers when he edged Fernando to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella after the hosts had taken the second new ball, late on Day 1.
