13:02   Smith, Clarke centuries help Australia dominate Day 2

STUMPS - DAY 2

Aus 517-7 (120 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

So that's stumps for the second day. The umpires decide that the light is not good enough to continue as the players go off the field.

Smith was unbeaten on a superb knock of 162, having hit 21 fours in 231 balls, that helped Australia reach 517 for seven in 120 overs at close on Day 2.

Clarke, who returned from injury after taking painkillers, played a splendid innings of 128. He had resumed on 60 after he was forced to retire on Day 1 following a back injury.

The rain-hit day belonged completely to Australia, who hammered 163 runs in 30.4 overs for the loss of just one wicket.

All the Indian bowlers disappointed and looked clueless on how to stop Clarke and Smith's onslaught. Shami, Aaron and Karn picked up two wickets each with Ishant getting one wicket.

Surprising that Australia didn't declare before close and have a go at the Indians for a few overs.

It remains to be seen if they declare overnight and ask India to bat at the start of Day 3. Remember play starts 30 minutes early, at 0500 hours IST, on the third day.

Another possible chance putdown by India as Ishant is unable to take a difficult chance at deep square leg as Smith played an uppish sweep shot.

But Clarke falls off the next ball, hitting a sweep straight to Pujara at backward square leg.

The Australia captain walks back after a superb innings of 128, having put on 163 runs from 179 deliveries for the seventh wicket with Smith.

Despite the wicket, Australia have decided to continue and score more runs before putting India in.

Finally, a wicket for the visitors late into the second day after a few missed chances. Karn had a stumping chance and couple of catches dropped before he got lucky and got his second wicket.

New batsman Mitchell Johnson is beaten as he attempts to play the cut shot against Karn, who is pitching in the rough and getting some turn.

Aus 516-6 (119 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Clarke uses his feet against Karn and lofts him perfectly in the gap at midwicket for a boundary before he drives it down to long-off for one.

Smith then plays the reverse sweep where Aaron makes a tumbling stop at deep point to keep it down to two followed by a single on the leg side to get eight runs from the over.

Smith throwing his bat at everything now as he heaves Ishant on the leg side for a couple before Clarke gets a boundary attempting a similar shot.

Australia have scored 59 runs from the last 10 overs to take their score to 516 for six in 119 overs with Clarke on 128 and Smith on 161.
12:42   Smith hits 150, Clarke scores 100 as Aus cross 500
Aus 501-6 (117 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith looks to make room and flay Karn through the off-side but gets an edge which flies past Kohli in the slips as the batsmen run across for three.

Clarke sweeps the next ball fine for a couple before he picks one from the next ball.

Ishant replaces Shami but Smith is hardly affected. He lofts the first ball over the leg side where it is stopped at deep midwicket for just a single.

Clarke miscues the flicks and lobs it on the leg side but it falls safely on the leg side between two fielders as India's frustration grows.

Ishant then bowls a big wide down the leg side which is called five wides to bring up Australia's 500, in the 117th over.
12:32   Smith hits 150, Clarke scores 100 as Aus dominate
Aus 482-6 (113 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith, 146, is dropped at square leg as the right-hander hit a flat sweep shot but Pujara was unable to hold on. India's fielding has been poor on the second day with Smith getting two lifelines already.

With the boundary well protected on both sides, Clarke and Smith are content to pick up singles.

Smith pulls a short ball to fine leg to bring up his 150 from 218 balls as Australia continue to pile on the runs.
12:27   Play resumes as Australia continue to bat

Aus 482-6 (113 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Karn Sharma will start from round the wicket as India's tactics are clear, to stop the flow of runs even if it means employing a negative line.

The first ball is a dot ball before the two batsmen pick five easy singles from the rest of the over.

Australia have been in a rush, having scored 38 runs from the last four overs.

Shami operates from the other end but still the runs are coming far too easily for the Australians, who pick four runs from the over.
12:17
The action should resume in the next 10 minutes provided we have no further rain.

"Play will recommence at 5:50pm AEDT if there is no further rain! 21 overs remaining on day two," announces Cricket Australia on Twitter.

So Australia have not declared yet as Smith and Clarke walk out to resume their innings.

12:04
The rain has stopped and the groundstaff have again gone out to the middle to take off the covers to a loud cheer from the crowd inside the stadium.

But it is still very dark and gloomy at the Adelaide Oval and it remains to be seen when play starts.
11:56   Rain stops play after Smith, Clarke hit centuries
The prospects of play getting underway on Day 2 are looking very bleak at the moment.

"Still raining. Darker now. Quite gloomy. Don't see any more play happening today. But waiting. #AusvInd," Chetan Narula, who is covering the Test match in Adelaide for PTI, writes on Twitter.

RAIN STOPS PLAY!

Aus 473-6 (111 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Shami replaces Aaron but no change in Australia's approach. Smith steers the second ball past the slips for a four. The next ball is a slower ball but Smith sends it crashing through the off-side for another boundary to take his score to 141, his best in Test cricket.

Clarke makes room and steers the last ball past the slips for the third four of the over, which goes for 13 runs.

And we have another rain interruption as the players are forced off the ground again.

Australia are in control on 473 for six in 111 overs with Smith on 142 and Clarke on 109 with the duo having added 119 runs from 130 deliveries so far.
10:54

Aus 460-6 (110 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith has decided to go on an all-out attack. He makes room before he heaves a short ball over mid-on for a four and the next ball is slammed through midwicket for another boundary.

Two balls later he pulls a short ball behind square on the leg side but Shami's good stop keeps it down to two.

The next ball is again sent screaming back past the bowler as umpire Ian Gould takes evasive action. Three fours from the first five deliveries of the over before they get a single from the last ball to make it 15 runs from the over.

Smith, on 131, gets a lifeline as he comes down the track but is beaten by Karn in the flight and wicketkeeper Saha messes up an easy stumping. That must hurt the Indians as they had a big chance after a long time but failed to capitalise.
10:47

Aus 442-6 (106 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Karn Sharma comes into the attack. Three singles before Smith crashes a short delivery through point for a boundary as the runs continue to flow.

Clarke is now looking to go after the bowlers. He makes room and tries to smash Aaron through the off-side but misses before he pulls a short ball on the leg side for one.

Smith then drives it through the covers where Ishant Sharma makes a good stop on the boundary as his cap hits the ball but the umpires have not noticed it.

The last ball is smashed powerfully back past the bowler who does well to get out of the way as it beats mid-off for a boundary.

10:37   Clarke hits century as Australia continue to dominate

Aus 426-6 (105 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Varun Aaron comes back into the attack and he could expect some help under the overcast conditions at the Adelaide Oval.

He switches to round the wicket and starts with a bouncer to Clarke, who ducks under and does the same to the next ball.

He pulls the third ball to deep square leg to move to 99. Smith slaps the fourth ball but India have a fielder at deep point so he gets just a single.

Another short ball which Clarke defends with a straight bat getting behind the line of the ball. He flicks the last ball to fine leg for a single to bring up his 28th Test century, from 182 balls.

A muted celebration from the Australian captain, kisses his helmet and appreciates the applause from the crowd.

It has been a difficult few weeks for Clarke after the passing away of Phil Hughes, his close friend and team mate. He has also been struggling with a back injury during this Test match but he has played a splendid innings to put Australia in a position of strength.

10:29   Play resumes after rain break on Day 2

RAINS STOP PLAY!

Aus 423-6 (103.3 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

So, finally the match resumes after the lunch break.

Murali Vijay will finish off his over, which was left uncompleted because of rain. Smith edges the last ball but it falls short of Shikhar Dhawan at first slip.

10:27
We finally have some good news from Adelaide.

The umpires have announced that play will resume at 3.30pm local time which is around 10 minutes from now.

Kyly Clarke got a chance to meet up with her husband and Australia captain Michael Clarke as the players waited for the match to resume.
10:02
The rain has finally relented and the groundstaff make their way to the middle to take off the covers. If it doesn't rain any more, we could have a restart soon.

"Round of applause as @TheAdelaideOval ground staff enter the arena. They are preparing to take the covers off... it appears.#AUSvIND," Cricket Australia posted on Twitter.

RAINS STOP PLAY!

Aus 423-6 (103.3 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Looks like we are set for a long delay as the rain refuses to relent in Adelaide. Also, it has been confirmed that play will start half an hour early on Day 3 to make up for the time lost due to rain today.

"Not a good sight at the Adelaide Oval with play delayed due to rain. Could be a while before we get going again," ABC Grandstand posted on Twitter.

RAINS STOP PLAY!

Aus 423-6 (103.3 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Play finally resumes after the lunch break. Smith clips the first ball on the leg side for two runs to bring up his century, from 173 balls. He goes towards the 408 written on the outfield and raises his helmet and bat towards the sky to celebrate the landmark and also remember his friend and team mate Phil Hughes.

Karn Sharma is introduced as Clarke takes a single to take the score to 408 and the crowd stand up to applaud the score and pay tribute to Phil Hughes, who was Australia's 408th Test cricketer.

Clarke then charges the leg-spinner and lofts him straight down the ground for a boundary. He tries the shot again but this time gets an edge for three runs past the slip fielder. The last ball is short and wide as Clarke rocks back and punches it through point for a boundary to move to 97.

Kohli decides to bring on part-time spinner Murali Vijay into the attack. Smith takes a single form the first ball followed by Clarke hitting it to midwicket for one to take his score to 98.

Smith blocks the third ball before it starts to rain and the players are forced to go off the field.

RAIN STOPS PLAY!

Aus 405-6 (101.4 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

And the rain delay continues. The covers were taken off and it looked like play would resume after the lunch interval, which was taken early.

But it has started to pour again at the Adelaide Oval forcing the covers to be called back again. So we continue to wait for the weather to clear!

"Players were making their way back out to the middle and the rain returns," Cricket Australia wrote on their Twitter.

It has started to pour again and the covers are back on.

The umpires have decided to take an early lunch and are expecting to resume play at 1300 hours local time which is 0800 IST.

"Aaaaaand now the covers are coming back on again. Could be one of those days #AUSvIND," Martin Smith (@martinsmith9994) tweets from Adelaide.

RAIN STOPS PLAY!

Aus 405-6 (101.4 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

The rain is pretty heavy as the groundstaff rush to put on the covers. Australia, who resumed on 354 for six, made good progress in the first hour of play as Clarke and Smith scored 51 runs in 12.2 overs that were bowled before the rain interruption.

Australia captain Clarke returned to the crease on Wednesday after receiving pain-killing injections for a lower back injury that saw him retire hurt on the opening day.

Australia physio Alex Kountouris said the skipper was struggling with "quite a significant back injury" but that he had been determined to "give it a go".

Smith has batted fluently and quietly gone about his task to be two runs away from a deserved century, having hit 14 fours in 171 deliveries so far.

India's pacers once again disappointed and once again bowled a lot of short deliveries to let Australia off the hook after a flurry of late of wickets on Day 1.

Shami comes back as Kohli looks to juggle the bowlers around hoping for a breakthrough. Shami has been pretty average today and the two batsmen have dealt with him quite easily.

At the other end, Aaron is also struggling to get his bearings right. A half-volley is driven through the covers for a boundary by Smith, who moves to 98.

But he will have to wait for his century as it starts to rain at the Adelaide Oval and this time it is heavy enough to stop play.

Australia are comfortably placed on 405 for six in 101.4 overs with Smith on 98 and Clarke on 85.
06:31   Smith, Clarke take Australia past 400
Aus 400-6 (100 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Clarke struggling with his back but he is still brave enough to take on the short balls and attempt the pull shots.

India's fastest bowler Varun Aaron is brought back as Clarke flicks a full delivery to deep midwicket for a single.

Smith continues to bat fluently and plays a crisp cover drive but is unable to find the gap. In his next over, Aaron drifts on the pads and Smith helps it fine for a four to move into the 90s.

The umpires initially decide to halt play with a very light drizzle on but the two batsmen are not that keen to go off. And the umpires decide to continue after a brief chat with the one of the groundstaff but it is getting very dark in Adelaide.

Clarke then steers a short wide delivery from Aaron over the point region for a boundary as Australia continue their good progress on the second morning.

After exactly 100 overs, Australia are 400 for six with Clarke on 85 from 114 balls and Smith on 93 from 164 balls with the duo having added 46 runs so far this morning.

Aus 388-6 (96 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Clarke is clearly in a lot of discomfort and is trying to score as many as runs as possible. Shami helps his cause by bowling a short wide delivery which the Australian captain slashes over point for a four. He then attempts a quick single and struggles as he scampers for the run.

Ishant bowls a short ball which Clarke pulls with an obvious grimace but still manages a single to deep square leg.

Time for spin as leggie Karn Sharma is brought into the attack. Clarke is not fully fit but he is not missing out on any chance to score as he steals a quick single. Karn then drops one short and Clarke whips it through midwicket for a boundary, that was a gift really!

Nothing happening for the Indian bowlers on the second day and it would be surprise really if both Clarke and Smith fail to get past the 100-run mark, with the duo batting on 79 and 87 respectively.
05:58   Smith, Clarke push Australia on Day 2
Aus 374-6 (93 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

A disappointing start by Ishant Sharma as he bowls a half-tracker first up which is smashed through the covers for a boundary by Smith. The lanky pacer gets his bearings right for the rest of the over.

Shami repeats the dose in the next over as Clarke helps himself to an easy boundary through the off-side. Two balls later, he takes on a short ball and pulls it through midwicket for a couple to give ample proof that his back is fully functional now. Clarke then makes room and looks to steer it through point where Karn Sharma makes a good stop at point. The Australian captain then gets an inside edge which is brilliantly stopped by wicketkeeper Saha, diving to his left.

Ishant induces an edge from Smith, who looked to play the drive through the off-side but is fortunate to get a boundary on the leg side. But he plays a confident cover drive off the last ball for the same result as Australia look to adopt a positive approach on the second morning with 20 runs coming from the last three overs.
05:43   Clarke walks out to bat as play starts on Day 2
Aus 354-6 (90 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

As expected, it was only a 10-minute delay as the umpires walk out followed by the players to start proceedings on Day 2 of the first Test. It is still overcast at Adelaide Oval but not immediate threat of rain.

The good news for Australia is that captain Michael Clarke has recovered from his injury sufficiently enough to resume batting. He had retired hurt on Day 1, with his score, and at the other end Steve Smith will start on 72.

Mohammed Shami, who had ended the first day with a wicket, will finish off the 90th over.

A tidy start from Shami, as Clarke plays out the over watchfully including swaying out of the way of a short ball.

05:38   Rain delays start on Day 2 of Adelaide Test
There was a slight drizzle some time back at the Adelaide Oval so start of play on the second day has been delayed for the moment. We are expecting a minor delay of around 10 to 15 minutes, so play resume pretty soon.

05:28   India eye quick wickets on Day 2 of Adelaide Test

Aus 354-6 (89.2 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the first Test match in Adelaide, on Wednesday.

On Day 1, David Warner scored an entertaining century before India fought back with four late wickets.

At stumps, Steve Smith was unbeaten on 72 from 130 balls, with the help of nine fours, to keep the runs coming after the dismissal of Warner.

Warner had dominated the first two sessions as he hammered 145 from 163 balls with 19 fours. Captain Michael Clarke stroked 60 before he was forced to retire with a back injury and his further participation in the match seems doubtful.

Ishant was India's best bowler on Day 1 with one for 56 in 20 overs while his pace partners Shami (2-83) and Aaron (2-95) bagged a couple of wickets each but went for plenty of boundaries.

Karn Sharma had a tough baptism to Test cricket but he claimed the big wicket of Warner for figures of one for 89 in 23 overs.

With Clarke unlikely to bat, Australia are as good as seven wickets down and India would be looking to wrap up the tail soon on Day 2.
