Pujara battled hard to reach 79 not out from 173 balls at close, while Rahane was not out on 40 with the duo putting an unbroken stand of 93 from 203 balls.

Rahul had earlier played a fluent innings of 51 before India lost a few quick wickets including captain Kohli, was given out to a dubious leg before decision for 15.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took six for 63 as India fought back to dismiss the tourists for 276 in the morning session as they took a 87-run first innings lead.

STUMPS - DAY 3

India 213-4 (72 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Around 10 mins left for stumps as Australia bring back Starc to break this partnership before the end of play.

Rahane is watchful as ever as he defends the first five balls and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Rahane looks like he has shut shop as he looks to block everything against O'Keefe. He goes chasing at one which turns but luckily he hasn't edged it before he watchfully defends the rest of the over.

O'Keefe rushes through his over which enables Australia to sneak in another over before stumps are taken.

Pujara was not so keen to play that last over but now he has to face Starc. He edges the first ball which goes past Smith in the slips for a four. Starc bowling from round the wicket and looking to angle it into the right-hander.

Interestingly, Australia have placed a fielder under the helmet at short second slip. Starc bowls it on the pads as Pujara flicks it on the leg side for a single before Rahane defends the last ball.

For the first time in the series, a session goes wicketless as India go into stumps at 213 for four in 72 overs, for an overall lead of 126 runs.

India 207-4 (69 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Rahane moving quite well in the crease, defending well off both and front foot. O'Keefe drops it short and Rahane rocks back and whips it through square leg for a four as the duo continue to swell the lead.

Lyon gets extra bounce and Pujara is hit on the gloves but does well on both occasion to keep it away from the fielders. With a little bit of luck, Lyon could have easily ended up with a wicket in that over, but India's batsmen working quite hard at the moment.

O'Keefe also gets one to grip and turn goes past the edge of Rahane's bat, who leaned forward to defend as the left-arm spinner sends down another maiden.

Rahane sweeps Lyon for a single to bring up India's 200, for the first time in the series. He repeats the shot off the last ball but this time he misses and it goes past the wicketkeeper for four byes.

Pujara turns O'Keefe fine on the leg side for two runs to take the partnership to 87, the best in the series for either teams.

India are 207 for four in 69 overs with Rahane on 39 and Pujara on 74 for an overall lead of 120 runs.
16:05   Pujara, Rahane take India's lead past 100-run mark

India 191-4 (62 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Rahane feeling a lot more confident now as he hits a nice drive through the off-side but Warner in the covers does well to stop it. Three balls later he punches a wide delivery through point where the fielder half stops it to keep it down to two.

Pujara picks a single off Lyon before Rahane plays the sweep and picks up two runs. The last ball just kicks up from one of the cracks as Rahane lets it go and Warner at leg slip dives to stop the byes.

Spin from both ends as O'Keefe comes into the attack. Pujara glances the first ball fine on the leg side for three runs before Rahane defends the rest of the over.

In the next over, Pujara turns Lyon past leg slip as Hazlewood comes up with the slide but his boundary is touching the ropes which means India get the boundary.

India are 191 for four in 62 overs, taking their lead above the 100-run mark, which means they are effectively 100 for four.

A superb comeback from the Indians as they make a strong comeback with the bat after three successive failures in the series so far.

Aus 276 | Scorecard

Lyon comes back into the attack, to replace O'Keefe with Australia looking to make a breakthrough as both Rahane and Pujara looking quite comfortable.

Rahane and Pujara pick a single each before the former steers a wide delivery past point for a couple.

Hazlewood comes into the attack, replacing Marsh, who bowled three overs in his first spell. He starts with a short wide delivery which Pujara steers fine on the off-side past the slip fielder for a four. The next ball is guided past the point region for a couple to raise the 50-run stand for the fifth wicket. A couple of deliveries one stays low but Pujara manages to get his bat down and keep it out.

Rahane feeling confident to take on Lyon as he sweeps him powerfully through square on the leg side for a four. Two balls later, he punches a wide delivery through the covers for three runs before Lyon gets some extra bounce off the last ball hitting Rahane on the gloves.

Nathan took eight wickets in 22.2 overs in the first innings but in the second he is yet to pick up a wicket in his first 22 overs.

India have lifted the tempo in the last few overs, scoring 19 from the last three overs to take the score to 178 for four in 58 overs, for an overall lead of 91 runs.

India 159-4 (55 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Rahane gears up to sweep Lyon before deciding last minute to block it back to the bowler. Two balls later, he sweep it to deep square leg to take the score to 140 and stretch the lead above the 50-run mark.

Two more singles as Rahane and Pujara slowly but steadily look to build the partnership.

Lyon gets the ball to bounce steeply as Pujar rocks back and is hit on the gloves but the ball lands safely on the pitch.

Hazlewood drops short and Rahane rocks back and smashes it square on the off-side for a four before he takes a single.

Starc comes into the attack, replacing Hazlewood. Rahane turns the third ball on the leg side for a single and Pujara picks one off the last ball on the off-side.

Another bowling from the other end as O'Keefe is called into the attack. Rahane is stuck on the pads but the inside edge saves him before he defends the rest of the over.

Starc bowls it on the pads as Pujara flicks it fine on the leg side to bring up India's 150, in the 49th over. The next ball also slips down the leg side which Rahane clips square and picks up two runs.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh comes into the attack in place of Starc. A full delivery which keeps a bit low hits Pujara on the pads but the LBW decision is turned down with the ball sliding down the leg side.

O'Keefe gets some turn as he beats Pujara, who comes forward to defend. He looks to turn the next ball on the leg side as Pujara gets an inside edge off his pads on the leg side for a single.

Pujara clips Marsh square on the leg side for a single to bring up fifty, from 125 balls. A superb knock under pressure on a difficult wicket from the Indian right-hander as India look to build the lead.

India 134-4 (42 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Lyon to start the post-tea session with the ball. The first ball is way down the leg side as it beats everyone including the wicketkeeper for four byes. Pujara comes down the track and drives the next ball through the covers for a four before he defends the rest of the over.

Hazlewood, who bowled a superb spell in the post-lunch session, will operate from the other end. Rahane picks a single from the first ball and Pujara does the same four balls later to get two runs from the over.

Pujara chips down the track and drives Lyon straight as the bowler fields on his follow through and sends a quick return to the keeper's end, forcing Pujara to scamper back to his crease.

Pujara turns the fourth ball on the leg side for a single before Rahane gets one which bounces steeply as he gets it off his gloves but it goes over the leg slip fielder for a single.

TEA - DAY 3

India 122-4 (39 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

The brilliant catch by Smith to dismiss the well-set Rahul off O'Keefe could well turn out to be one of the turning points of the game.

Rahul was looking good on 51, after he had put on 44 runs for the second wicket with Pujara before his dismissal handed the initiative back to Australia.

Virat Kohli fell again cheaply, for 15, this time to a dubious leg before decision which was reviewed but stood with the on-field umpire's decision.

Ravindra Jadeja was bowled by Hazlewood, who also accounted for Kohli and Mukund to leave India in trouble at 122 for four in 39 overs at the tea break.

They lead by just 35 runs and their hopes will largely rest of Pujara, who is batting well on 34, with Rahane on two.

Overall, the session belonged to Australia, as he picked up four wickets for 84 runs in 29 overs the post-lunch session.
14:12   Hazlewood's double strike leaves India in trouble

India 122-4 (39 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Pujara looks to continue the tempo after Kohli's dismissal as he pulls a short ball from Lyon over midwicket for a four.

He picks a single off the fourth ball before Jadeja turns the last ball through midwicket for a couple.

Hazlewood has a huge appeal for LBW turned down against Jadeja with the ball again looking to slip down the leg side.

However, he gets his man in the next over. This time he bowls Jadeja through the gate as India slip further to 120 for four.

Jadeja left a big gap between bat and pad as he tries to drive it through the off-side and Hazlwood also got some reverse on that.

Ajinkya Rahane gets a difficult delivery first up, extra bounce from Hazlewood which strikes him high on the bat. He steers the fifth ball to thirdman for two runs to get off the mark before defending the last ball of the over to send the second session.

14:00   Captain Kohli fails again, India in trouble

India 112-3 (35 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Change of ends for O'Keefe as he replaces Lyon and bowls for the first time from the Pavilion End.

Pujara takes a single from the first ball before Kohli clips the third ball square on the leg side and forces Pujara to come back for the second. He then drives the next ball straight down the ground to long-off for a single.

Hazlewood gets Kohli as he given out LBW with the India captain immediately asks for the DRS.

The ball stays low and seems to have brushed the bottom of Kohli's bat before it hit the pads and he could escape with the benefit of doubt.

But the third umpire stays with the on-field umpire's call which means Kohli fails for the fourth successive time in the series. The third umpire says there is no conclusive evidence to suggest the ball hit the bat before it struck the pads so he stays with the on-field umpire's call.

This is a big blow for India's hopes as Kohli walks back for 15 with India reduced to 112 for three, with a lead of just 25 runs.

Kohli is visibly disappointed and he is still seething with anger in the Indian dressing room.

Have a look at the DRS screenshots of Kohli dismissal on the left.

India take a gamble as Ravindra Jadeja is sent in at No. 5 ahead of Ajinkya Rahane and Karun Nair.

Hazlewood gets another one to stay low as Jadeja is struck on the pads but this time the umpire doesn't give it out with the ball slipping down the leg side.

13:42   Pujara, Kohli take India past 100

India 106-2 (33 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Lyon keeping it full and on the stumps as Pujara leans forward to defend before he pulls the last ball to deep midwicket for a single.

In the next over, Pujara gets an inside edge for a single before Kohli is beaten by one as O'Keefe gets some turn. The spinner appeals but the umpire is not even interested.

Pujara drives a full delivery from Lyon to long-on for one before Kohli whips the next square on the leg side for another single and the two batsmen pick another couple of singles in the next over.

Pujara chips down the track to Lyon but seems to have got an inside edge off the pads which falls safely on the off-side. He then flicks the next ball on the leg side for a single and Kohli whips the fifth ball through midwicket for one to bring up India's 100, in the 32nd over.

Kohli must be itching to make a big score following three successive failures against Australia. Hazlewood comes into the attack after a short spell from O'Keefe and he starts with a half volley on the stumps which Kohli hits through midwicket for a four and then takes a quick single on the off-side.
13:20   Rahul falls for 51 as India wipe off Australia's lead

India 87-2 (25 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

O'Keefe comes back into the attack and he strikes with the key wicket of Rahul, with Smith taking absolute blinder in the slips.

Rahul played a vital innings of 51 before he edged one as he looked to drive but Smith came up with one of the best catches you will ever see. The Australian captain dived full length to his right and plucked it out of mid air when it had nearly passed him and all this in a matter of a couple of seconds. That was just unbelievable!

That could be a match turning moment as India were looking to build a good partnership and carry themselves towards a healthy score.

Virat Kohli gets off the mark with a single before Pujara hits it to point where the fielder misfields to give away two runs.

India are 87 for two in 25 overs, as they manage to wipe out Australia's lead for the loss of both their openers.

13:09   Rahul hits half-century to lead India's fightback

India 81-1 (23 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Hazlewood induces an edge off Rahul but it doesn't carry to the fielder in the slips. The next ball is on the pads as the right-hander clips it fine for a four and once again he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Rahul doing well to keep most of the strike till Pujara gets his eye in. India are 66 for one in 20 overs with the duo putting 27 runs from 56 balls with Rahul facing 37 balls and Pujara getting only 19 deliveries to face.

Starc comes into the attack for another short burst in place of Hazlewood, who got the first breakthrough in his previous spell.

A single to thirdman takes Rahul to 40, the first time he has got to this mark in the second innings with his previous highest being 38.

Pujara clips a full delivery through midwicket for two runs and then picks a single square on the leg side.

Pujara and Rahul are looking to milk Lyon for singles thereby forcing him to adjust his length. Pujara takes one on the leg side before Rahul drives it through the covers for two runs and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Starc bowls a wide half volley which Rahul drives through the covers for a four  and then picks two runs through midwicket.

A single off the last ball helps Rahul bring up his half-century from 82 balls. This has been a superb innings from the young right-hander as he hits half-centuries in both innings in his first match at his home ground.
12:46   Rahul, Pujara steady India after Mukund's dismissal

India 60-1 (18 ovs) & 189 vs
Aus 276 | Scorecard

Lyon gets one to turn big from well outside the off-stump as Rahul is beaten before he takes a quick single on the off-side. Pujara then drives a full delivery through the covers for a couple before he gets a lifeline off the next.

Lyon gets one to go on straight as Pujara gets the edge but wicketkeeper Wade can't his gloves to it as it hits his pads and falls safely on the off-side.

This was a good over from Lyon as he got good amount of turn and bounce similar to the line and length he got so much success in the first innings.

In Lyon's next over, Pujara again gets the edge but Steve Smith puts down a straightforward chance at first slip, as he grasses a one-handed catch to his left.

Lyon all over Pujara, whom he has dismissed five times in 15 innings. He takes a single off the next ball and bring Rahul back on strike, who has again looked so comfortable at the crease.

Rahul picking singles at will and has been hardly troubled so far in this innings. He drives the fourth ball to long-on for one before Pujara defends the last two deliveries as India cross the 50-run mark, in the 14th over.

In the next over, Rahul drives Hazlewood through the covers for a couple to bring up his 1000 runs in Test cricket, in his 15th match at an average of 41.

Rahul is look quite comfortable as he punches Lyon against the spin through point for a couple. He has been quite positive with his footwork against Lyon, going right back or forward and has been looking for runs at every opportunity.

Pujara also looking to be positive. He steers a wide delivery from Hazlewood past the gully fielder for a four and then defends the rest of the over.

Rahul using the crease quite well against Lyon. He goes right back to defend a short ball and brings his bat down in time to one which stays quite low. He then goes across and looks for the sweep but misses before he flicks the last ball to square for one.

With the bat, India make a confident start as they reached the lunch break at 38 for no loss in 10 overs.

While Ashwin struggled to pick up wickets, claiming just two in 49 overs, Jadeja cleaned up the Australian lower order as he picked up three of the four Australian wickets to fall on Day 3.

Led by Jadeja's splendid show with the ball, India picked up four wickets for 39 runs in 16.4 overs to restrict the Australian lead to under the 100-run mark.

The hosts will need their top order batsmen to continue their good showing after the lunch break and lay the foundation for a big total.
11:33

India 38-0 (10 ovs) & 189 vs Aus 276 | Scorecard

Australia introduce spin as Nathan Lyon, who took eight wickets in the first innings, comes into the attack to bowl the sixth over.

Mukund defends the first three balls before he slaps a short ball but the fielder at point does well to save some runs and keep it down to just one.

Rahul looks to flick it on the leg side but hits it uppishly, however, it falls short of the fielder at midwicket and misses the flick with the last ball.

The two openers have shown good intent and not missed any opportunity to take the singles. Mukund taps Starc on the off-side for a quick single before he responds to a call for another quick run as Rahul drives a full toss to the left of mid-off.

Starc bowls a short ball down the leg side as Mukund looks to pull but misses. Two balls later he again goes for the pull but gets a top edge which goes behind the stumps and it carries all the way for a six as India reach 33 for no loss in seven overs for a scoring rate of nearly five.

Starc and Mukund exchange a few words at the end of the over, spicing up the contest even more.

Rahul goes back and flicks Lyon through square leg for a single before Mukund does well to see off the over from the off-spinner. Infact, the last ball he leaves goes straight on and passes very close to the off-stump.

Spin from both ends as Steve O'Keefe comes into the attack. Rahul again gets the single to get off the strike and Mukund deals with the rest of the over with some confident defending.

Big spin for Lyon as it turns right across Rahul and is stopped by Warner at leg slip. Rahul goes back and turns the next ball behind square on the leg side for a single.

11:17   India off to a good start after Australia bowled out for 276

India 24-0 (5 ovs) & 189 vs Aus 276 | Scorecard

India's openers -- KL Rahul and Abhinav Mukund -- have a big task on hand. They have a huge task first up, facing the dangerous Mitchell Starc, who has a habit of picking up early wickets.

Rahul turns the first ball on the leg side for a single to get off the mark. Mukund has a nervous poke off the next ball as he chases a wide one but is beaten before he gets a bye off the next as the ball stays quite low.

Starc gets one to swing in big, the inswinging yorker, which comes in sharply but the inside edge saves KL Rahul. The pacer loses his line with the next ball as Rahul glances it fine on the leg side for a four before he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Rahul standing outside his crease to Hazlewood as he punches a full delivery straight down the ground for his second four. He then turns the fifth ball on the leg side for one before Mukund gets off the mark with a couple through midwicket.

Starc bowls a full delivery outside the off-stump to Mukund, who lets it go but watches the ball go along the ground to wicketkeeper Wade. The last ball is a full toss which Mukund clips through midwicket for his first boundary which should make him feel good after a duck in the first innings.

Mukund doing well to play the ball late and though the uneven bounce is giving him some trouble, he is looking to get behind the ball and play with caution.

Starc goes round the wicket as he drifts a bit wide and Rahul steers it past gully for a couple before he gets one on the leg side and Mukund picks one from the last ball.

This is a good start from India as they reach 24 for no loss in five overs.

10:51   Jadeja takes 6 wkts, Australia bowled out for 276

Aus 276-all out (122.4 ovs) vs India 189 | Scorecard

Ravindra Jadeja claimed the final wicket of Josh Hazlewood to finish with splendid figures of six for 63 to bowl out Australia for 276 as they took a 87-run first innings lead, on Day 3.

Hazlewood had a wild swing but ended up hitting it straight to the fielder at long-on to perish for one.

Superb bowling from Jadeja, who finishes with six for 63 in 21.4 overs as compared to Ashwin, who bagged two for 84 in 49 overs.

Australia have a healthy lead of 87 runs on a pitch not so easy for batting and India's batsmen have also been struggling for runs in this series so far.

If India can get away to a good start and eat up the deficit as soon as possible then they will be able to put themselves in a good position by stumps on the third day.
10:38   Jadeja takes 6 wkts, Australia bowled out for 276

Aus 274-9 (120.2 ovs) vs India 189 | Scorecard

Wade comes forward to defend but plays down the wrong line to Jadeja, who appeals for LBW which is given out by the on-field umpire.

Wade immediately goes for the DRS but the ball tracker shows that the impact is in line with the stumps and ball is going on to hit the stumps which means the decision stays.

Wade walks back for 40 as Australia are reduced to 274 for eight, a lead of 85 runs.

Interestingly, Jadeja has picked up his fourth wicket in his 21st over, while Ashwin has got just two in 48 overs.

Nathan Lyon looks to sweep the first ball he faces but he misjudges the length as he is beaten by the full delivery and is caught plumb in front. Superb bowling by the left-arm spinner as he completes his five-wicket haul.

Lyon also takes the DRS and again the umpire's decision stays as Australia lose their ninth wicket.

Jadeja on a hat-trick and facing him will be last man Josh Hazlewood, who gets off the mark with a single.

Jadeja gets one to bounce and turn as O'Keefe is hit on the gloves and he certainly won't mind seeing the pitch behave like this.

Ashwin not able to make the same sort of impression with the ball like Jadeja from the other end as Hazlewood plays out a maiden over, defending with caution.

Jadeja bowls the arm ball which O'Keefe keeps out before he takes a single to long-off.
10:18   Ashwin dismisses Starc, Australia lose 7th wicket

Aus 269-7 (118 ovs) vs India 189 | Scorecard

Starc again playing a vital innings with the bat. He guides Ashwin through the slips for a couple before he tries the sweep again but misses. The last ball turns and bounces as Starc is hit on the gloves but there is no one at silly point to take the catch.

Ishant bowls it fuller as Wade gets the edge which goes past the slips and goes for a four despite a desperate dive from Pujara on the thirdman boundary to take Australia past the 250-run mark.

Ashwin continues to bowl outside the leg stump as the turn beats Starc's flick and it goes past the wicketkeeper for two byes. Two balls later, Ashwin has a LBW appeal turned down against Starc as India's frustration continues to grow.

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack in place of Ishant. Wade paddle sweeps Jadeja for a single to fine leg before Starc collects a quiet single on the off-side. Another single for Wade before Starc gets the edge which goes to thirdman for two runs.

Ashwin's line outside the leg stump is easily to deal with for the Australians as Wade plays out a maiden over.

In the next over, he comes down the track to Jadeja and drives him down the ground past mid-off for a four.

Ashwin has a huge appeal for caught behind off Starc as he looks to cut and the umpire gives it out but the batsman immediately takes the DRS. And there is nothing on the Ultra Edge which means the original decision is overturned.

But Ashwin gets his man a few deliveries later as Starc swings Ashwin over midwicket but Jadeja does well to take a good catch near the boundary.

09:50   Wade, Starc build Australia's lead on Day 3

Aus 246-6 (110 ovs) vs India 189 | Scorecard

It is overcast in Bengaluru as Ishant Sharma gets the first ball to kick up from length as Matthew Wade blocks it uncomfortably as he is hit on the gloves. A few deliveries later, Ishant beats Wade with one which moves away just enough to go past the edge and he defends the last ball on the off-side.

It is Ashwin who starts from the other end. He is bowling way outside the leg stump to Starc, who lets it go between his legs and even wicketkeeper Saha misses it to give away four byes and he sweeps the next ball to fine leg for one.

Ashwin needs the ball to turn big if he has to be effective from this line outside the leg stump else he becomes easy for the batsmen to deal with.

Starc clips Ishant from the stumps through midwicket for three runs before Wade defends the rest of the over.

Starc tries to heave Ashwin over midwicket but can't connect with the slog sweep as the ball turns and bounces. He looks to sweep two balls later but can't connect again before he takes a single off the last ball.
