16:40   Starc blasts quickfire half-century, Australia 256-9 at stumps

STUMPS - DAY 1

Aus 256-9 (94 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

A good post-tea session helps Australia finish Day 1 on a high as they reach 256 for nine at stumps.

Starc remains unbeaten on a quickfire 57 from 58 balls, having hit five fours and three sixes, while Hazlewood held on bravely for one run from 31 balls, with the duo involved in an unbroken stand of 51 from 73 balls for the 10th wicket.

Starc's counter-attack helped Australia fight back after they were reduced to 205 for nine at one stage.

Australia scored 103 runs in 31 overs, while losing five wickets, on a pitch which offered a lot of turn and bounce.

On a turning track, it was pacer Umesh Yadav, who stole the show, with a fiery display of fast bowling as he claimed four for 32 in 12 overs.

Jadeja and Ashwin picked up two wickets each, while Jayant got one wicket but struggled to find his rhythm in a disappointing performance with the ball.

India will hope to finish off Australia early in the morning on Day 1 before looking to follow up with a good showing with the bat.

Hazlewood flicks Ashwin on the leg side for a single to get off the mark before Starc also picks one two balls later.

Ishant continues, as he comes on to bowl the 92nd over of the day which means India won't bat if Australia are bowled out in the next 10 minutes.

Starc is playing for stumps it looks like as he takes a quiet single off Ashwin off the last ball before Hazlewood plays out the over.

In the next over, he again takes a single off Ishant, who is bowling the final over of the day.

Hazlewood plays and misses thrice outside the off-stump as he looks to drive through the covers but is unable to make any connection and he offers no stroke to the last ball to end the opening day.

16:21   Starc blasts 47-ball half-century to take Australia past 250

Aus 250-9 (90 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ashwin beats Starc with another one which turns miles and goes past the outside the edge. Two balls later, the left-hander slog sweeps it high over midwicket for a six but is unable to take a single from the last ball which would have helped him keep strike for the next over.

So India have taken the second new ball after 83.5 overs as Umesh bowls it down the leg side.

Despite the new ball, India continue with spin from the other end as Jayant comes in from the other end as Starc picks another single.

In the next over, Starc looks to pull a short ball but misses before he slaps an overpitched delivery straight down the ground for a four.

Immediately, Umesh bowls another bouncer which he avoids by swaying out of the way. He then whips Umesh off his hips through midwicket to collect three runs and keep strike.

Starc goes after Jayant again, lofting him straight down the ground for another huge six. Two balls later, he has a heave but can't make proper connection before he takes a single off the fourth ball.

Jayant seems to be struggling with his rhythm as he gets a second warning for running on the pitch.

Finally, Kohli brings back Jadeja and he nearly gets another wicket. He gets one to spin sharply as Starc gets the inside edge which narrowly misses the stumps and goes behind for a four. Two balls later, he heaves it down the ground, wide of the long-on for another boundary.

He swings again off the fifth ball, hitting it high over long-on for another six.

Starc is playing a valuable hand with the bat, having raced to 43 from 39 balls before stealing a quick single off the last ball to keep strike.

India seem to have run out of plans against Starc's counter attack as he brings back Ishant. Starc has another wild swing but gets it wide of long-on for a four.

He pulls the next ball in thumping fashion for a four behind square to race to his fifty from just 47 balls, having hit five fours and three sixes.

Starc's counter attack has taken Australia to 250 in 90 overs.

The 10-wicket partnership has so far added 45 runs from 49 balls and Hazlewood is yet to score a run.

15:48   Umesh claims 4th wicket as Australia collapse

Aus 205-9 (82 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

India haven't taken the second new ball yet. Starc gets an inside edge off Ashwin to take Australia past the 200-run mark before he takes a single.

Saha takes an unbelievable catch diving full length to his right, and plucking it out of mid air to send back O'Keefe but credit must go to Umesh, who got the batsmen to have a slash at it.

Off the very next ball Nathan Lyon is struck on the pads and is given out leg before wicket as umpire Nigel Llong ruled it out LBW. He took the DRS but to no avail as the umpire's decision stands.

Umesh on a hat-trick but Josh Hazlewood manages to defend it as the ball is short and he keeps it out.
15:26   Renshaw falls for 68, Australia lose 7th wicket

Aus 198-7 (79 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Renshaw flicks Ashwin on the leg side for a single before new batsman Mitchell Starc tries a heave on the leg side but fails to make proper connection.

Umesh getting a fair amount of reverse as Renshaw looks to defend one outside the off-stump which moves away and goes past the edge of the bat. However, two balls later he flicks one fine on the leg side for a four.

Ashwin strikes with the key wicket of Renshaw as this time he finally gets the edge and is caught by Vijay at second slip after a superb innings of 68.

He faced a testing spell in the morning session before he had to retire because of a stomach bug. The 20-year-old resumed batting in the post-lunch session and batted bravely to score a half-century to help Australia close in on the 200-run mark.

Turn and bounce for Ashwin as Renshaw could not do much about it and ended up getting the edge.

Steven O'Keefe is beaten by one which turns big and right across him as it goes fine on the leg side for two leg byes.
15:14   Wade out for eight, Australia lose 6th wicket

Aus 190-6 (76 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

The young Renshaw get to his half-century, off 125 deliveries, with a four down the leg side off Ashwin.

A superb knock from the 20-year-old in his first innings in India on a pitch which has turned right from the start.

Also adding to his woes was the stomach bug which forced him to retire to the dressing room mid-way through the morning session and he only resumed batting a few overs before the tea break.

Jadeja gives Wade some width and also drops short as the left-hander looks to drive through the covers but gets a thick outside edge through thirdman for a four.

He then tries to sweep Jadeja but is nearly beaten as he gets the bottom edge and he flicks the next ball past short fine leg for two runs.

Jayant comes into the attack in place of Jadeja, who was taken two for 59 in 23 overs so far.

Renshaw once again uses his feet to good effect as he comes down the track and lofts Jayant over mid-off for a four.

Ashwin gets one to turn square, going past the edge of the Renshaw's bat, who looks to defend but is beaten all ends up.

But the left-hander is looking to be positive against Jayant, whom he smashes for another four down the ground, past long-on.

Umesh comes back for another spell and he again strikes in his first over. Wade is given out leg before wicket as he calls for the DRS which goes in the bowler's favour.

A full delivery which came in and struck Wade in line of the stumps as Australia lose another wicket.
14:46   Jadeja strikes again, Australia five down

Aus 168-5 (68 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Jadeja to resume the action after the tea break. Left-hander Renshaw defends the first two balls before he comes down and lofts the left-arm spinner over midwicket for a four.

Ashwin from the other end. Marsh takes a single from the first ball before Renshaw adopts a more cautious approach against Ashwin, defending four balls in a row before taking a single from the last ball.

Renshaw continues to be positive against Jadeja as he looks to sweep but gets a top edge which goes over the fielder, halfway down to square leg, and it goes for a four. He slaps the next ball through midwicket for a couple to take his score to 49.

Jadeja does the trick with the quicker delivery yet again as Marsh goes on the backfoot but misses it and is trapped plumb leg in front.

The left-arm spinner set up the batsman so perfectly. The previous ball turned away sharply beating right-hander Marsh before Jadeja fired in the next one right on the stumps to get his man leg before wicket.

Jadeja once again shows why he is the most difficult to face in Indian conditions.

Matthew Wade gets a peach first up, bounce and turn as it goes off his hips fine on the leg side for a couple of byes.

14:15   Smith and Handscomb perish, Australia 153-4 at tea

TEA - DAY 1

Aus 153-4 (63 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

If Australia did well in the morning session, India staged a good comeback in the post-lunch session to reduce Australia to 153 for four with two late wickets close to the break.

Overall, 30 overs were bowled after lunch in which India claimed three wickets for 69 runs.

At one stage, Australia were looking good on 119 for one before Marsh, Handscomb and Smith perished in the space of nearly 13 overs to hand back the initiative to India.

The wicket of Smith would prove to be crucial for India as the Australia captain is a good player of spin and is capable of the playing the big innings.

The wicket is getting more and more difficult for batting with the spinners having a ball, getting a lot of turn and bounce.

India would be hoping to claim a few quick wickets after the tea break and look to bowl out Australia as soon as possible.

TEA - DAY 1

Aus 153-4 (63 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

India's two best bowlers, Jadeja and Ashwin, strike in successive overs as the momentum firmly swings in India's favour with around 7-8 minutes to go for lunch.

Both the spinners took time to get their first wickets, Jadeja in his 18th over and Ashwin in his 20th over, but suddenly they look like taking a wicket every few deliveries.

Jadeja has a confident shout for LBW turned down against Renshaw, who comes forward to defend but is beaten by one that turns in sharply.

At tea on Day 1, Australia are 153 for four in 63 overs with Renshaw on 38 and Mitchell Marsh on two.

Two wickets in two balls as Australia slip to 149 for four in the 61st over.

And have Australia lost another one? New batsman Mitchell Marsh is given out caught behind off Ashwin and he straightaway takes the DRS.

That is a very good review as the ball missed the bat by a long way and clipped the pads on the way to the wicketkeeper as Marsh survives.
13:58

Aus 149-3 (60 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ashwin comes on from the other end, taking over from Ishant. The first ball turns down the leg side to Handscomb, who then takes a single off the next through midwicket.

Smith comes down the track and flicks Ashwin through midwicket for one.

In the next over, Jadeja gets the breakthrough for India with the wicket of Handscomb.

The quicker delivery from Jadeja goes straight on as Handscomb plays all over it and is struck right in front of the stumps to be given leg before wicket for 22.

He enquires with Smith whether they should take the DRS but his captain is not interesteds and asks him to continue with his walk back to the pavilion.

Renshaw, who earlier retired ill with a stomach bug on 36, comes back to continue his batting at the No. 5 position.

He did well in the morning session to keep the Indian bowlers at bay and again he will face a testing 15 minutes before tea.
13:49   Smith, Handscomb build Australia's total

Aus 146-2 (58 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ishant comes back as India look for some reverse swing, looking to beat Smith through the gate as he shuffles across but Australia's batsmen seem to have no problems.

Ashwin overpitches as Handscomb plays a handsome drive through the covers for his second boundary.

Three balls later, he flicks it in some style through midwicket for the second four of the over as Australia continue to make good progress.

Smith turns a full delivery from Ishant which shapes in through midwicket for one before Handscomb pulls a short ball to fine leg for another single.

Jadeja comes back to replace Ashwin, who was hit for two fours in his previous over.

The first ball slips from the spinner's hands and bounces a couple of times as Handscomb throws his bat at it but fails to make connection.

Jadeja oversteps yet again, he has been quite erratic today before Handscomb takes a single to fine leg. But the last ball is a beauty, bouncing a lot more while also turning enough to beat Smith all ends up.
13:15

Aus 128-2 (50 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Jadeja has a a confident shout for LBW turned down against Smith as he comes forward to defend but is struck on the pads. However, the Indians don't have the DRS even if they don't agree with the umpire's decision.

With the last ball he again beats Smith, this time with one that turns away from the right-hander.

Handscomb also looking to be positive as he comes down the track and gets a thick inside edge against Yadav for a four behind square on the leg side.

Jadeja drops it short as Smith pulls it over midwicket for a four before he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Umesh makes way for off-spinner Jayant as Smith inside edges the first ball for two runs on the leg side and then takes a run.

Jayant errs with his length as Marsh cuts it past point for a four. Meanwhile, Jadeja gets one to bounce off length as the left-hander somehow defends it on the leg side.

Marsh looks to sweep Jayant but misses the shot as India employ a fielder at leg slip to stop him playing the shot.

But Marsh tries the shot again and he misses it yet again but it goes off the back of his bat and is caught at leg slip.

Poor batting from Marsh as he went for the sweep yet again despite a fielder being moved leg slip and cost Australia another wicket.

New batsman Peter Handscomb turns the last ball fine on the leg side for two runs to get off the mark.

12:39   Smith, Marsh take Australia past 100

Aus 105-1 (40 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Smith picks a single off Jadeja, to bring up Australia's 100, in the 38th over.

In the next over, Umesh again slides down the leg side as Smith flicks it fine for a four. A few deliveries later, Smith is struck on the pads by a full delivery from Umesh as the umpire turns down the LBW appeal.

Smith is struck on the pads while trying to defend from the crease but the ball is slipping down the leg side and missing the leg stump.

That was a poor review from India as the hosts lose both their DRS reviews after 39 overs.

Jadeja sends down another quick over, conceding just a single, as Australia reach 105 for one in 40 overs.

Warner, on 20, enjoyed a bit of luck as he bowled off a no-ball as Jayant Yadav overstepped in the 20th over.

Renshaw, after a good innings of 36, had to unfortunately retire with illness after suffering from a stomach bug.

LUNCH - DAY 1

Aus 84-1 (33 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

A couple of overs for Umesh before he makes way for Jadeja, who will bowl possibly the final over of the session.

India have built some pressure after Warner's wicket as they have bowled 23 dot ball in a row since then including three maiden overs in succession by Ashwin and Umesh.

Jadeja gets one to turn and bounce, going past the outside edge of Smith's bat.

It will be very difficult for the new batsmen to start off on this wicket with the ball turning and doing things.

Jadeja rushes through the over in just 80 seconds as India have enough time to sneak in another quick over before the lunch interval.

Marsh ends the run of successive maiden four overs with a single to get off the mark and Smith also picks one to get first run, off the 17th ball he faces.

11:21   Umesh strikes, Warner dismissed for 38

Aus 82-1 (28 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

In the next over, Warner looks to slog sweep Jadeja but fails to make proper connection for a single on the leg side.

Renshaw gives Jadeja the charge but is unable to get it away before he comes down again and heaves it through midwicket for a four.

Warner sweeps Ashwin for a single to fine leg as Renshaw again defends confidently before the bowler and captain Kohli have a long chat.

Extraordinary shot from Warner as he slaps one from Jadeja through deep square leg for a four before he steals a quick single on the off-side.

Renshaw then comes down the track and lofts Jadeja over long-on for a six.

Australia are looking to be aggressive against Jadeja and disrupt his rhythm. India definitely feeling the pressure as they have been unable to get any wicket so far on a wicket offering a lot of assistance to the spinners.

Ashwin gets another one to turn as Warner is beaten again as he looks to defend off the backfoot and he repeats it a couple of deliveries later, that was virtually unplayable as Saha does well to collect it.

Ashwin follows it up with a full toss which Warner sweeps through square leg for a four.

Jadeja hits Renshaw on the pads as the Indians appeal but it has come off an inside edge.

In the next over, Ashwin strikes Warner on the pads as he looks to defend but umpire Richard Kettleborough turns down the appeal. Ashwin has a chat with captain Kohli before deciding not to take the DRS.

Warner then comes down the track and nearly chips it back to the bowler but it falls just short. Warner then walks across and paddles it fine on the leg side for another single.

Finally, Kohli decides to bring in Umesh Yadav, who has been India's most consistent fast bowler through the last few months in home Test matches.

He starts off with a no-ball before he strikes two balls later with the key wicket of Warner. The left-hander, who made 38 from 77 balls, goes after a wide delivery but gets an inside edge which goes back on to the stumps.

10:30   Australia off to a good start in Pune after opting to bat

Aus 40-0 (16 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

We will have spin from both ends now as young off-spinner Jayant Yadav comes into the attack, replacing Ishant, who bowled four overs in his first spell.

He starts with a beauty, an unplayable delivery to Warner, as the ball turns enough and goes past the outside the edge. Two balls later, he hits a full delivery through the gap at midwicket for his first boundary and two balls later Warner cuts it for a four as the left-hander finally looks to break free.

In the next over, Renshaw has a huge appeal for a catch by the wicketkeeper off Ashwin turned down as the Indians take the DRS. But the replays show that there is nothing on the UltraEdge as the ball clearly missed the edge.

The pitch is giving a lot of help to the two spinners early and batting will be a test on this turning track.

Australia have done well to negotiate the first 10 overs the score reaches 27 for no loss with Renshaw on 12 and Warner on 15.

India have already taken the first defensive step as a fielder is placed at sweeper cover. Warner cuts a short ball from Jayant but only gets a single to the fielder in the deep.

Turn and bounce for Ashwin as he beats Warner once again who must consider himself lucky not to have edge it and Ashwin does it again a few deliveries later with one that is flatter.

Ashwin bowls another ripper, a vicious delivery which turns big and also bounces beating Warner all ends up before he defends the last ball.

Jayant has already bowled quite a few loose deliveries in this spell. Once again he drops short as Warner is quick to rock back and pull it over midwicket for a four.

He makes a good comeback, bowling it full and getting big turn, drawing Warner forward who has a poke but is beaten.

Jayant bowls Warner off the final delivery of the over but the umpire calls it a no-ball as it hits the leg stump and goes for a boundary down the leg side. Warner had walked across a long way and exposed his leg stump which Jayant struck but had overstepped by a long way.

Australia have done well to survive the first hour as they reach 40 for no loss in 16 overs with Warner on 20 and Renshaw on 15.

Ashwin giving it a lot of air as Renshaw is beaten by one that turns away, going past the edge of the bat as wicketkeeper Saha fails to collect but Rahane does well at first slip to stop it on the bounce.

A watchful Renshaw then watchfully blocks the rest of the over.

Warner picks another single, on the leg side before Renshaw clips Ishant through the leg side for a couple.

Interesting tactics from Warner, to just collect the singles and not looking for anything rash early on. He drives Ashwin on the leg side for a quick run and Renshaw taps it on the leg side and picks another single.

Warner again turns Ashwin square on the leg side for another easy single and he takes another run in the next off Ishant.

Warner seems he has had enough of the singles as he gives Ashwin the charge and looks for a big hit over the leg but fails to make connection. He then sweeps the next ball for a single to deep square leg before Renshaw confidently comes forward and blocks the rest of the over.

Renshaw edges the first ball past the slips for a four as it stays a bit low and also moves ever so slightly. He is beaten off the next as he again plays a loose shot before he defends the next.

The pitch is absolutely dry and the pieces are coming off as early as the first over every time Ishant's big boots lands on the track.

The last ball slants across the left-hander who is again beaten as he looks to defend. Good first over from the tall India pacer.
