STUMPS - DAY 4

England 182-6 (47.2 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Ashwin struck in the final over of the day with the wicket of Jake Ball, who is caught behind for one, to end a perfect day for the Indians.

England are reduced to 182 for six in 47.3 overs, still needing another 49 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

Jonny Bairstow kept England afloat with a fighting half-century as he stroked 50 not out. He had put on 92 runs for the fourth wicket with Joe Root, who made 77, to rally England after they had lost a few early wickets.

Ashwin and Jadeja picked up two wickets each, while Jayant and Bhuvneshwar bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, India were bowled out for a massive 631 in 182.3 overs to grab a huge first innings lead of 231 runs, in the post-lunch session on Day 4.

Kohli smashed a career-best 235, and was involved in a record eighth wicket partnership of 241 runs with Jayant Yadav, who became the first Indian batsman to score a century at No. 9.

Jayant hit his maiden Test century, as he played a superb knock of 104 runs, hitting 15 fours in his 204-ball knock.
16:28   Ashwin scalps Stokes for 18, England lose 5th wicket

England 180-5 (44 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Ashwin appeals for the wicket of Stokes, who is caught close to the wicket by umpire Oxenford. The all-rounder takes the DRS review after a chat with his partner Bairstow.

He tries to reverse sweep but hits it on his shoes and is taken at slips by Vijay.

Stokes walks back for 18 as England are reduced to 180 for five, still trailing India by 51 runs.

16:08   Root dismissed for 77, England lose 4th wicket

England 167-4 (40 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Jadeja makes it another wicket in the next over as Bairstow is given caught behind by on-field umpire Bruce Oxenford.

But Bairstow takes the DRS instantly and that turns out to be a good call as Jadeja had overstepped and it is called a no-ball and it looks like he didn't even get an edge on that.

Jayant drops one short as Ben Stokes pulls it through midwicket for a four.

Meanwhile, a change at the other end as Ashwin replaces Jadeja from the Pavilion End.

Bairstow tries to reverse sweep but is beaten by the big turn before he shuffles across and turns the next ball to fine leg for one.

Stokes punches a short ball from Jayant through the covers for a four before he slog sweeps the next ball over midwicket for a six.

Ashwin appeals for a catch on the leg side against Bairstow as umpire Oxenford rules it out but the batsman appeals immediately. And the DRS goes in England's favour as the ball was nowhere close to the bat, and came directly off the pads. England will heave a sigh of relief that they had a review in hand.

15:44   Root dismissed for 77, England lose 4th wicket

England 141-4 (35 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Jayant strikes with the key wicket of Root, who is trapped leg before wicket after an entertaining innings of 77, having hit 11 fours in his 112-ball knock.

He put on 92 runs from 128 balls for the fourth wicket with Bairstow to rally England after a few early wickets.

Root was caught on the backfoot as he looked to defend Jayant but missed and was caught right in front of the stumps.
15:34

England 138-3 (33 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Jayant has a huge appeal for a catch at short leg turned down against Root and the Indians decide against taking the DRS and rightly so.

Root sweeps the next two deliveries for two runs and a four respectively, with the second one being pulled behind square on the leg side.

The Indians appeal again, this for a LBW against Root, but the umpire turns it down again and they take the DRS after much discussion. However, the review goes waste as the ball is comfortably missing the leg stump, which leaves India with no reviews for the next 50 overs.

Jayant gets one to turn sharply as Parthiv misses it down the leg side to give away four byes and a single from the next ball to Root brings England's deficit under 100.

Bairstow then pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four as England reach 138 for three in 33 overs, scoring at more than four runs per over.

Root is unbeaten on a brisk 75, from 107 balls with the help of 11 fours, having batted extremely well against the spinners.

Bairstow has also impressed during his innings of 31, with the duo adding 89 runs for the fourth wicket so far.
15:22   Root, Bairstow rally England after early wickets

England 116-3 (30 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Bairstow looks to cut Jadeja but gets a bottom edge which goes between the wicketkeeper and the slip fielder for a four. In the next over, he looks to reverse Ashwin but gets a glove and Kohli, who is initially going to his right, dives to his left but can't hold on to a sharp chance.

Both Root and Bairstow are looking to attack and disrupt the spinner's rhythm. Root again brings out the sweep and despatches Jadeja through square leg for a four.

He shuffles across and tries to reverse Ashwin but fails to make connection. Root tries the reverse sweep again against the off-spinner, this time he connects, but can't beat the fielder at point.

England have recovered to 116 for three in 30 overs, with Root (66) and Bairstow (22) adding 67 runs for the fourth wicket.

Ashwin, who bowled 11 overs for 40 runs in his first spell, makes way for the young Jayant Yadav.

15:00   Root hits half-century but India still in control

England 93-3 (23 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Jadeja beats Jonny Bairstow with one turns as he looks to defend. In the next Ashwin also turns it big, as Bairstow is beaten and so is wicketkeeper Parthiv to give away four byes.

Root sweeps Jadeja fine on the leg side for a four before he slog sweeps the left-arm spinner through midwicket for the second boundary of the over.

Root and Bairstow looking to be positive and not missing any opportunities to score. Bairstow flicks Jadeja through midwicket for three runs before Root plays the sweep for a four.

In the next over, Root reverse sweeps Ashwin for a four through thirdman to bring up his half-century, from 75 balls. He then drives the next ball through the covers for another boundary as England reach 93 for three in 27 overs.

TEA - DAY 4

England 49-3 (13.2 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

England are in complete shambles on 49 for three in 13.2 overs at the tea break on the penultimate day, with Jadeja taking two for 13.

They still need another 182 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

Root was battling hard on 30 from 48 balls on a pitch giving the spinners a lot of turn and bounce.

14:09   Jadeja's double strike leaves England in a mess

TEA - DAY 4

England 49-3 (13.2 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Jadeja gets the key wicket of Cook, who is dismissed leg before wicket for 18. He takes the DRS review after the umpire rules him out but even that goes against him as England are reduced to 43 for two, in the 12th over.

The ball is turning, bouncing and doing everything and England's batting line-up faces a might test.

Ashwin appeals for a catch against Root, who looks to defend but is beaten by the extra bounce as Parthiv takes it next to the batsman. The Indians, a lot of them close in go for the appeal but umpire Erasmus turns it down. And the Indians take the DRS immediately as Kohli consults the close in fielders and Ashwin.

But that's a howler! That was nowhere close to the gloves and the Indians also end up wasting a DRS review.

But Uday strikes in the very next over as Moeen Ali is caught at leg slip for a duck as England go into the tea break at 49 for three in the 14th over.
13:58   Cook, Root steady England after early wicket

England 35-1 (10 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

Joe Root gets off the mark with a boundary as he steers Umesh through the gaps between the slips and gully after Cook had taken a single from the first ball of the second over.

Bhuvneshwar is hit for a couple of fours, one each by Root and Cook, before he makes way for Ravindra Jadeja, who is called into the attack to bowl the eighth over.

Root goes after him immediately as he steps out to the first ball and drills it through the covers for a four. Jadeja gets right back, getting the next ball to turn and bounce, as Root withdraws at the last moment. He produces another beauty, going past the edge of the bat again. He plays the last ball of the backfoot and is again beaten as Jadeja starts off with a bang.

No thinking twice now for Kohli as he calls Ravichandran Ashwin from the other end, who starts from round the wicket to Cook, who picks a single on the off-side.

Root sweeps the fifth ball for two runs on the leg side and then picks one from the last ball.

In the next over, Cook flicks Jadeja fine on the leg side for a four past the fielder at leg slip.

Root (22) and Cook (12) have steadied the ship somewhat after the early wicket as England reach 35 for one in 10 overs.

13:39   England lose Jennings early after India post 631

England 12-1 (5 ovs) & 400 vs India 631 | Scorecard

The worst possible start for England with the bat as they lose opener Keaton Jennings in the first over of the innings.

He is trapped leg before wicket off the second ball by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a duck.

A full delivery strikes him on the backfoot as umpire Marais Erasmus gives him leg before wicket and the young opener after consultation with captain Cook decides not to take the DRS.

Interestingly, the Hawkeye shows that the ball would have clipped the outside half of leg stump which means that England would have lost the DRS review based on umpire's call factor.

Joe Root manages to see off the remaining three deliveries of the over.

Good stuff from the two Indian pacers, Bhuvneshwar and Umesh Yadav, as they bowl a good testing spell to both Cook and Root, not allowing them to get away with easy runs.

Jayant hit his maiden Test century, as he played a superb knock of 104 runs, hitting 15 fours in his 204-ball knock.

England have their task cut out with around 47 overs left on the fourth day and a full day's play left on Monday on a pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners.

The two England spinners toiled long and hard. Rashid finishes with four for 192 in 55.3 overs, while Moeen took two for 174 in 53 overs.

India are not declaring yet and we could see some big hitting from the last wicket pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav.

Both get off the mark with a single off Rashid before Umesh pulls a short ball from Woakes through midwicket for a four.

Bhuvi makes room and smashes a full delivery straight back over the bowler's head for another boundary. He ends the over with another boundary, as he looks to steer it to thirdman but ends up edging it between the wicketkeeper and slip fielder.

India 615-9 (180 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Finally, England manage a breakthrough as Jayant is stumped off Rashid after a superb innings of 104 from 205 balls, having hit 15 fours.

He was involved in a record eighth wicket stand of 241 runs from 352 balls, India's best for the eighth wicket in Test cricket, which ensured that England now need a miracle to make a comeback in this game.

Kohli decides to cut loose as he lofts Woakes straight down the ground over long-on for a six.

In the next over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is put down by Alastair Cook at silly point off Rashid.

Kohli looking to attack everything as he flashes at a wide delivery from Woakes for two runs to thirdman. However, two balls later he perishes as he looks to flay it over the off-side but is caught at deep cover.

Kohli walks back after a splendid innings of 235, having 25 fours and a six in his 340-ball knock to put India firmly in the driver's seat. All the England players come up to him and congratulate him as he makes his way to back the pavilion.

He posts the highest innings by an Indian captain in Test cricket, going past MS Dhoni's 224 against Australia in Chennai.

12:31   Kohli hits double ton, Jayant scores century; India cross 600

India 604-7 (176 ovs) vs England 400 | Scorecard

Pacer Chris Woakes to start with the ball for England after the lunch interval. Three singles from the first four balls before Jayant is struck on the helmet as he looks to duck under a bouncer. Kohli plays a nice drive through the covers for two runs.

Leg-spinner Rashid from the other end. He looks to bowl it wide of the leg stump on the rough and tie down the two right-handers. Rashid is getting a lot of turn and bounce as Jayant is beaten by one and even the wicketkeeper misses it to get four runs behind the wicket. He takes a single from the last ball to take his score to 98 and also retain the strike for the next over.

Woakes bowls some good bouncers and has troubled the Indian top order batsmen earlier in the series as well. He starts his new over with another good bumper as Jayant sways out of the way at the last minute before he takes one off the third ball to move to 99 and Kohli hands him the strike back again with a run to thirdman.

He steers the fifth ball to thirdman for a single to bring up his maiden century in Test cricket in just his third match at the highest level.

The Haryana all-rounder took 196 deliveries to get to the landmark, having hit 14 boundaries in total and was instrumental in India dominating the morning session, which allowed Kohli to take his time to get his eye in.

Time to cut loose looks like as Kohli slams a wide delivery from Woakes over the off-side field for a four to take India past the 600-run mark, in the 176th over, while the lead also crosses the 200-run mark.

Another couple of bouncers from Woakes to Jayant, who is happy to see it go through to the keeper.

Of course, Yadav's century would be on India's mind in the post-lunch session, but they would be keen to continue batting as long as possible and ensure they wouldn't need to bat again in this match.
