Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb hit half-centuries to steer Australia to 200 for six as the third Test finished in a draw. The series-deciding final Test will be start in Dharamsala from Saturday.

Australia batted on bravely on the final day, playing out nearly 100 overs to deny India a victory after they had taken a 152-run first innings lead.

The young Handscomb in his first tour of India stood out with his temperament as he finished unbeaten on 72, having played out 200 deliveries. His partnership with Marsh (53) was crucial in helping Australia save the match as the duo played out 62.1 overs during their 124-run fourth wicket partnership.

Australia didn't lose a single during the post-lunch session which eventually played a huge role in the visitors saving the match.

Jadeja was India's star with the ball as he finished with four for 54 in 44 overs, for a total of nine wickets in the match, while Ashwin managed just a wicket each in the two innings.

The series-deciding fourth and final Test will start in Dharamsala from Saturday.

Aus 190-6 (98 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Sunil Gavaskar says he finds it hard to understand why India continuing despite there being no chance of pushing for victory with around 20 minutes left for stumps, which includes 10 minutes for change of ends. He believes India could do with some rest than exert themselves with the next match just five days away.

Matthew Wade clips Ashwin through midwicket for a four as he gets some useful batting practice out in the middle.

The match is not going anywhere as the Indians continue to bowl late on Day 5 with their chances of pushing for victory all but gone.

Virat Kohli still effecting the fielding changes but Handscomb finds the gap through the covers off Jadeja but decides against taking the run.

Strangely, Indians continue to bowl as Wade drives Ashwin through the covers for a four to bring up the 200 for Australia, in the 99th over.

Some pointless cricket going on as India won't take the option of draw. Handscomb plays a nice drive through the covers off Jadeja for a four to take the lead past the 50-run mark.

Even umpire Ian Gould had a word with India captain Kohli, who is adamant that they will continue to bowl.
16:09   Maxwell fails with the bat, Australia 6 down

Aus 190-6 (95 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Jadeja creating a few problems as he appeals for leg before against Handscomb but the right-hander had got a clear inside edge. He flicks the next ball on the leg side for a single and Maxwell takes a run off the next ball.

The appeals are getting far more request as Ashwin has another leg before appeal turned down against Maxwell with the ball pitching well outside leg stump.

The Indians are giving Maxwell a hard time with constant chatter from close to the stumps. He fails to make it count as he gets inside edge and is caught at silly point off Ashwin after scoring just two.

Australia are 190 for six with a lead of 38 runs with around 25 minutes left for close. This match is surely headed towards a draw even if Australia collapse from hereon.
16:01   Jadeja picks 4th wicket, Australia 5 down

Aus 188-5 (92 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Jadeja finally ends India's long wait for a wicket as he gets Marsh caught at short leg after a splendid innings of 53. He played a vital knock to keep the Indian bowlers at bay and take Australia closer to a draw, as he played out 62.1 overs during his 124-run fourth wicket partnership with Handscomb.

Jadeja gets one to bounce off the rough as Marsh comes forward to defend but end up lobbing a simple catch to Vijay at short leg as he was hit high on the bat.

A huge appeal for LBW against new batsman Glenn Maxwell but he got a clear inside edge and India didn't take the DRS.

Ashwin comes on from the other end. He has a confident shout for LBW against Maxwell but the impact was well outside the off-stump.

Maxwell taking his time between deliveries as Kohli is unhappy and has a few words with the right-hander, who manages to see off the over from the off-spinner.

Aus 183-4 (90 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

India have just 15 overs left in the last mandatory hour of play but they might settle for a draw much earlier if Australia don't lose a wicket in the next few overs.

Handscomb has shut shop and is only playing for time as he leans forward to defend Jadeja, who is bowling from round the wicket and he manages to spin the last ball past the edge of the bat.

Ishant comes back as he yet again takes a tumble but Australia's two batsmen out in the middle have stayed strong and solid.

Jadeja bowls another quiet over, his 39th of the innings, as Australia reach 183 for four in 90 overs, with a lead of 31 runs with around 45 minutes left for close.

Wonder how long Kohli will wait for before agreeing for a draw?

Aus 180-4 (87 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Ashwin, who picked up just one wicket in 34 overs in the first innings, has been unable to take any wickets in 22 overs in the second innings so far.

Ashwin and Jadeja rushing through their overs as India look to complete the 80 overs and take the second new ball as soon as possible.

India take the second new ball immediately as Ashwin continues. Marsh defends the first four balls before he takes one on the leg side from the fifth ball.

Marsh picks another single off Jadeja in the next over to inch closer to his fifty before Handscomb defends the remaining five deliveries of the over.

The two batsmen have played out 53 overs between them putting on 109 runs to slowly but steadily help Australia inch closer towards saving the match.

Ashwin strikes Marsh on the pads as the left-hander looks to flick it across the line but the LBW is turned down. Ashwin forces his captain Kohli to take the DRS which shows the ball would have clipped the outside half of leg stump which means the umpire's decision stays.

The spinners have not been able to make an impression with the second new ball and both Marsh and Handscomb look very comfortable.

Marsh gives Ashwin the charge and drives it through the covers for a four to bring up his fifty in grand style, from 190 balls.

Australia are 180 for four in 87 overs, with a minimum of 11 overs and around an hour's play left in the day.

Aus 170-4 (78 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Umesh glances Handscomb fine on the leg side for a four to bring up his half-century, from 126 balls. A superb gusty innings from the young right-hander under pressure on a fifth day track as he did well to keep out the world's top two spinners.

Jadeja appeals for LBW against Handscomb, who has shouldered arms to one pitched outside leg stump and is hit on the pads. Infact, Jadeja ran across the good length area of the pitch as he appealed and was warned by the umpire for the same.

India's chances of pushing for a victory are slowly evaporating as Handscomb cuts Jadeja for a four to take the score to 170 for four in 78 overs, an overall lead of 18 runs with a minimum of 20 overs remaining.

14:50   Marsh, Handscomb give Australia the lead

Aus 157-4 (73 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

India need a good spell of 30 minutes after the tea interval where they need to take around 3-4 wickets to stand any chance of pushing for a win.

Ashwin starts off proceeding after the tea break. Marsh is beaten by one which turns enough to beat the bat as he plays forward but is able to drag his feet back in time and survives a possible stumping chance.

He gets one to bounce and turn as Marsh is beaten again and Saha does well to collect it high as Ashwin bowls an excellent over first up.

Umesh has a huge appeal for LBW turned down against Handscomb as he plays back to one which comes in sharply. The umpire turns down the appeal as India take the DRS but the ball is clipping the bails which means the decision stays with the umpire's call.

Meanwhile, former India captain and local boy Mahendra Singh Dhoni has made his way to the JSCA stadium to witness the action.

Umesh bowls another quick yorker which Handscomb plays right back to but in the end manages to bring his bat down in time and gets a single on the leg side.

Jadeja comes back as Ashwin bowls just two overs after the tea break. Marsh gets a leg bye to level the scores.

Marsh flicks Umesh through square leg for a four to give Australia the lead.

Australia are 157 for four in 73 overs with India having a minimum of 25 overs to claiming the remaining six wickets and force a result.

TEA - DAY 5

Aus 133-4 (60 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

An outstanding session for Australia and they have to thank Marsh and Handscomb for showing great resolve and temperament to keep the Indian bowlers at bay for the last couple of hours.

The duo have so far added 85 runs for the fifth wicket but importantly played out 40 overs as Australia denied any wickets in the post-lunch session.

Marsh looked in good touch right from the start, scoring 38 from 127 balls, while Handscomb made was solid on 44 from 115 balls.

At tea on the final day, Australia reached 149 for four in 69 overs, trailing India by just three runs.

India have to pick up wickets quickly after the tea break or else the match looks to be slowly inching towards a draw.

Aus 133-4 (60 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Ashwin comes back for another spell, replacing Jadeja. However, India's sloppiness in the field costs them five runs as Rahul sends in a wild throw from the deep to give away four extra runs as the batsmen were completing an easy single.

Marsh is easily able to deal with Ashwin before Jadeja has a change of ends and comes back from the other end.

Handscomb drives the third ball through the covers for a couple as Australia continue to close-in on the lead.

India's best option will be the new ball but by then it will be too late for the hosts to force a result.

Jadeja hits Marsh on the pads but the umpire turns it down and Ashwin goes past the left-hander's edge in the next over but Saha fails to collect.

The pitch has slowed down considerably and both Marsh and Handscomb have got their eye in and it will take a special delivery from the Indians to make the breakthrough.

Ashwin hits Handscomb on the pads who had charged down the wicket but the umpire turns down the appeal and again no review by India with the ball clearly missing the leg stump.
13:45   Marsh, Handscomb keep India's bowlers at bay

Aus 133-4 (60 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Marsh and Handscomb have done well to keep the Indians at bay as they bring up their 50-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Marsh continues to look for runs as he cuts a short ball from Jadeja behind point for a four.

After a slow start, Handscomb cuts loose as he hits Ashwin for three fours in the 57th over. He chips down the track and hits a full toss through midwicket for a four before he cuts a short ball past point and then again gives the charge and hits a full delivery through midwicket to make it three fours in the over.

Ashwin is taken off after that disappointing over as Jadeja continues to work hard from the other end.

Ishant comes back from the other end. Handscomb runs the first ball down to thirdman for a single before Marsh blocks the rest of the over.

Australia have done well after the lunch interval to take the score to 133 for four in 60 overs, and now trail India by 19 runs. Importantly, for Australia there are only a minimum of 38 overs remaining, but India will surely look to bowl a lot more.
13:04   Marsh, Handscomb frustrate India

Aus 108-4 (50 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Marsh and Handscomb are looking quite settled and they would be happy to see India's best bowler Jadeja taking a break, who has made most of the rough outside the left-hander's off-stump.

Umesh has a LBW appeal turned as Marsh offered no stroke and was struck on the pads before Kohli decides to take the DRS.

The ball had pitched well outside the leg stump and the review was turned down instantly. Kohli is embarrassed as he watches the replay on the giant screen and he can't help smiling wondering how he went for the review in the first place.

And not surprising, Ashwin, who bowled nine overs after the lunch interval and didn't make much of an impression is taken off as he makes way for Jadeja.

He immediately has a huge appeal for LBW against Handscomb, who looks to pad one but that has pitched out leg stump and the appeal is turned down.

Change of ends for Ashwin, who comes on from the other end. Marsh takes a single on the leg side off the second ball before Handscomb chips down the track and takes one to deep midwicket.

Jadeja switches to round the wicket to right-hander Handscomb, hoping to bowl a delivery like he did to dismiss Lyon on Day 4. A couple of deliveries before he switches to his preferred over the wicket as Handscomb manages to defend the over.

Australia are 108 for four in 50 overs, still trailing by 44 runs with a minimum of 48 overs left in the day.

12:43   Marsh, Handscomb take Australia past 100

Aus 101-4 (44 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Umesh kicks off proceedings after the lunch break. Handscomb guides the fourth ball to thirdman for a single and Marsh picks up two leg byes despite missing the fine flick on the leg side off the last ball.

Ashwin bowled just one over in the morning session and he gets into the attack right away after lunch, replacing Jadeja, who bowled 18 overs in his first spell.

Handscomb gets an inside edge but it flies wide of the fielder at leg slip to give him one. The last ball is tucked through midwicket by Marsh to pick up three runs and also keep the strike.

In his next over, Ashwin induces another inside edge off Handscomb as the ball pops to Karun Nair at short leg, who barely has time to react as he does well to stay low and gets his hands to it but is unable to hold on.

India will need to show a lot of patience and gradually work towards getting their wickets which they did so well in the morning session.

Umesh bowls a good yorker to Handscomb who plays back and is lucky to have got an inside edge which saves him from a good leg before shout. The next ball holds its line as the right-hander edges it but it goes on the bounce to second slip who half stops it for a single.

Marsh is looking in good touch as he plays a nice straight drive for his third boundary to take his score to 22.

Handscomb gives Ashwin the charge and nearly hits the full toss to the fielder at short midwicket but he manages to play out the rest of the over.

Ashwin not creating as many problems for the batsmen as Jadeja did in the morning session. Marsh looks to maintain his positive approach as he gives Ashwin the charge and hits him down the ground past mid-on for a four.

While Handscomb has looked to defend everything to score eight from 43 balls, Marsh has looked for runs, hitting 27 from 49 balls, with four boundaries.

Australia are 101 for four in 44 overs, still trailing India by 51 runs.

11:42   Smith and Renshaw perish, Australia 83-4 at lunch

LUNCH - DAY 5

Aus 83-4 (36 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

A good session for the Indians as they managed to dismiss both the overnight batsmen -- Smith and Renshaw -- to reduce Australia to 83 for four in 36 overs, needing another 69 runs to avoid the innings defeat.

Ishant did well to set up Renshaw leg before wicket for 15, while Smith suffered a rare failure against India to be bowled by Jadeja for 21.

India did well to dry up the runs in the morning session as just 60 runs came in 28.4 overs, while picking up two wickets to keep themselves in a good position to push for victory.

Marsh was unbeaten on 15 and Handscomb on four at the lunch interval with a minimum of 62 overs left in the day.

Jadeja, who bowled non-stop through the morning session, was once the pick of the Indian bowlers as he took three for 22 in a miserly spell of 18 overs, while Ishant took one for 22 in seven overs.
11:31

Aus 83-4 (36 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Ishant mixing his length quiet well, a barrage of short balls to left-hander Shaun Marsh before he beats him with one that is pitched up and moves away, past the edge of the bat. Marsh keeps strike with a single from the last ball as he taps it to point to end another good probing over by Ishant.

Marsh turns Jadeja past leg sip for a single before Jadeja again gets one to spit off the rough as Peter Handscomb is hit on the gloves, trying to pad it away. He leaves another ball which hits him on the pads as Jadeja appeals for LBW but the ball has pitched outside leg stump.

Ishant gets one to swing in sharply but it slips down the leg side and beats the dive of Saha for four byes.

With lunch around 10 minutes, perhaps it's time to give the pacers a break and bring on Ashwin for a couple of overs.

Jadeja drops one short as Marsh flicks him through midwicket for a four before he takes a single.

And as expected Ashwin comes into the attack for the first time on Day 5, replacing Ishant. He bowls full as Marsh is rapped on the pads, looking to defend but the umpire turns down the appeal.

Ashwin giving it a lot of air as Marsh comes down but can't beat the fielder at short cover before he keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Jadeja to bowl the final over of the morning session. Marsh turns the second ball on the leg side for a single and Handscomb is happy to defend the remaining few deliveries but manages to get the last ball through point for three runs.
11:09   Smith and Renshaw perish, Australia in trouble

Aus 63-4 (30 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Jadeja strikes with the most important wicket for India, that of Australia captain Smith, who lets one go pitched on leg stump only to see it spin past his pads and crash into the stumps.

That was poor judgement from Smith as he looks to pad it but failed to get to the pitch of the ball which spun big from the rough. That wicket leaves Australia in trouble on 63 for four, with still another 89 runs needed to avoid the innings defeat.

Smith made 21 from 68 balls as India adopted a defensive approach him and his dismissal will certainly give the hosts a big lift in their push for victory.

Two big wickets, that of Renshaw and Smith in the space of four deliveries, as Australia are reduced to 63 for four in 30 overs.

Aus 63-3 (29 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Ishant not able to build the pressure from his end as he leaks runs. Renshaw turns the fourth ball on the leg side for a single before Ishant oversteps to give away a four.

He then bowls a full delivery on the stumps which Smith flicks through midwicket for a four.

Jadeja gets one to bounce big from the rough as the ball beats Renshaw who is looking to defend but it turns sharply and goes past the batsman and the wicketkeeper for a four. On another day, Renshaw might have well gloved it and caught at short leg or silly point but he has luck on his side on that occasion.

In his next over, Jadeja bowls a beauty to Smith, who defends from the crease but sees the ball spin the outside edge but he manages to see off the over.

Ishant strikes with the wicket of Renshaw who plays back to a full delivery which stays low and the umpire has no hesitation in giving him out leg before wicket. He consults his skipper Steve Smith, who is not in favour of taking the DRS review as Australia lose their first wicket of the day.

Renshaw played a patient innings of 15 from 84 balls but some drama ahead earlier in the over seems to have disrupted his rhythm. He backed off very late when Ishant was about to deliver resulting in some exchange of words before the India fast bowler pushed him back with a couple of short balls.

And Renshaw expecting another short ball played back to a full delivery but missed a straight one which kept low, catching him right in front of the stumps.

New batsman Shaun Marsh edged the first ball he faced past the slips for a four before he was hit on the body by a short ball.
10:43

Aus 48-2 (24 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Umesh continues to bowl wide outside the off-stump to Smith, who slaps it square past point for a couple before he defends the rest of the over.

In the next over, Renshaw has a close shave as he gets an inside edge with Jadeja again making most of the rough but it falls safely away from the reach of the fielder at short leg.

India have employed a 7-2 field for Smith with just two fielders on the leg side and rest packed on the off-side. India are looking to build the pressure by bowling a lot of dot balls and see if it works against Smith, who has been in terrific form right through the series.

Ishant comes in to replace Umesh as Smith drives the fifth ball square through the off-side for two runs. Australia have not been allowed to get the runs with just 20 runs coming from 13.4 overs with India's lead still over the 100-run mark.

Renshaw making most of his long reach as he continues to press forward to negate the threat of Jadeja, who is looking to target the rough and make something happen.

Wonder why Kohli has persisted with pacers from one end despite nothing happening for the fast bowlers when he has Ashwin waiting to bowl, on a fifth day track.

The wide outside off-stump line is not working against Smith. He steers Ishant through point for a couple and then plays a straight drive to mid-off for a single.

Australia have done well to play out the first hour with losing a wicket to reach 48 for two in 24 overs, as just 25 runs in 16.4 overs.

10:06   Smith, Renshaw keep India's bowlers at bay

Aus 38-2 (18 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Umesh tries a bouncer to Smith, who pulls it to deep square leg for one before Renshaw does well to avoid the next ball, which is again short and quick.

Renshaw steers Jadeja wide of the slips for a couple before he manages to see off the rest of the over.

Umesh bowling wide and full to Smith, who leaves the first four balls before he gets a bottom edge off the fifth. He drives the last ball to deep extra cover for a single to keep strike.

Smith does well to play Jadeja's over with caution before Renshaw continue his defensive tactics against Umesh, picking up a single from the last ball to keep strike.

Jadeja gets one to turn and bounce off the rough but Renshaw manages to keep it down, short of the fielder at leg slip. The next ball goes straight on as Renshaw is beaten again, trying to play for the turn but he manages to play out the over.
09:43

Aus 31-2 (10 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Ravindra Jadeja to continue his unfinished over from Day 4 and facing him is Australia captain Steve Smith.

He looks to turn the third ball of the day but it goes off the pads on the leg side for a leg bye.

Pace from one end as Umesh Yadav comes into the attack from the other end. The first ball is full and on the stumps as Smith flicks it to deep square for two runs to get off the mark.

Australia may be fighting for survival but Smith won't change his approach. He takes toll of another half-volley from Umesh, hitting a superb drive through the covers for a four.

In the next over, Jadeja beats Matt Renshaw with one that goes straight on with the arm before he takes a single from the fifth ball.

Australia are 31 for two in 10 overs, needing another 121 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

09:21   Dominant India eye victory on Day 5, Aus aim for survival

Aus 23-2 (7.2 ovs) & 451 vs India 603-9d | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of the fifth and final of the third Test between India and Australia in Ranchi on Monday.

Dominant India will continue to push for victory on the final day after reducing Australia to 23 for two at stumps on Day 4 after having taken a 152-run first innings lead.

And leading India's victory push will be Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed both the wickets in Australia's second innings, that of David Warner and Nathan Lyon.

The pitch is providing a lot of assistance to the spinners and Australia face a stiff challenge on having to survive the last day.

Australia will hope captain Steve Smith can continue his good form and keep the Indians at bay for as long as possible. He has already scored two centuries in the series, including a superb knock of 178 not out in the first innings of this Test.

Cheteshwar Pujara compiled an epic double century and Wriddhiman Saha hit a career-best 117 to deflate Australia and put India in a strong position on the fourth day.

Pujara became the first Indian batsman to face 500 deliveries in a test innings, spending more than 11 hours at the crease for his marathon 202 on the penultimate day of the contest.

Resuming the day with India 91 runs behind Australia's first innings total of 451, Pujara and Saha frustrated the tourists and batted through the first two sessions to forge a 199-run seventh wicket partnership.

Down the order, Jadeja clobbered a couple of sixes in his brisk unbeaten 54 to rub salt into Australia's injuries, celebrating his fifty by twirling his bat like a sword.
