Four runs in Southee's next over takes India past the 150-run mark, in the 32nd over. They would ideally like to add another 150 runs in the next 18 overs but they will need to preserve their wickets for the same and ensure that Kohli bats right till the end.

The singles are coming quite regularly for the Indians as both Kohli and Karthik seem to have got the measure of the wicket and also the not-so effective Kiwi bowling in the middle overs.

With the partnership building, Williamson brings back the experienced Southee with a view to make a breakthrough. And the fast bowler delivers as Karthik looks to pull a short ball but gets a top edge and is caught on the square leg fence.

A disappointing shot by Karthik as he walks back for a brisk 37 when he looked good for much more.

With Dhoni out in the middle and only Hardik Pandya left as the last recognised batsman, India certainly need this partnership to last as long as possible.

13:51   Dhawan out for 9, India lose early wicket

India 16-1 (4 ovs) vs NZ | Scorecard

Left-arm pacer Trent Boult to bowl the second over. Dhawan edges the first ball but it falls short of the slips before he taps the next ball on the off-side and gets off strike with a quick single.

Boult overpitches as Rohit delights his home fans with a sweetly timed drive through the covers for three runs as the fielder does well to stop it just inside the ropes as four come from the over.

In the next over, Rohit steers the first ball to thirdman for one before Dhawan pulls the next to fine leg for another run.

Rohit then lofts a length ball back over the bowler but hasn't timed it too well and picks up two runs as India reach 16 for no loss in three overs.

Boult strikes in his second over. Dhawan throws his bat at a wide one but only gets an edge and is caught behind for nine as India lose an early wicket.

Virat Kohli cautiously defends the rest of the over as Boult bowls a wicket maiden with India reduced to 16 for one in four overs.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to open the batting for the hosts with the experienced Tim Southee opening the bowling for the Kiwis.

Rohit gets off the mark with a single from the first ball before Dhawan drives the next ball straight for a couple of runs.

12:03   Rampaging India start as favourites against Kiwis
Welcome to the coverage of the first One-Day International between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

Hardly challenged in a dominating run this season, India once again start as overwhelming favourites when they take on an inconsistent-but-gritty New Zealand in a three-match ODI series.

The Virat Kohli-led side thrashed World champions Australia 4-1 earlier this month, and clearly the Black Caps will have to come up with a special effort to make a mark against the rampaging hosts.

India, who have won their last six ODI series, look unstoppable at the moment, especially in home conditions. Infact, since surrendering to Australia back in 2009-10, India have lost only to Pakistan (2012) and South Africa in 16 bilateral rubbers, a clear indication of how dominant they have been in familiar conditions.

Considering that the 4-1 result over Australia was achieved without skipper Virat Kohli being in top form and despite the absence of prolific opener Shikhar Dhawan, it was a huge achievement.

Vice-captain Rohit Sharma scored 296 runs, including a century and two fifties at an average just below 60. The ever-dependable Ajinkya Rahane hit 244 runs, which included four half-centuries, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya amassed 222 runs.

The ever-reliable Mahendra Singh Dhoni had a subdued time with the bat against Australia.

With a new-look spin attack with Chinaman Kuldeep Singh and orthodox leggie Yuzvendra Chahal, along with the left-arm orthodox Axar Patel as back-up, India's slow bowling too sports a supremely challenging look.

Among the pacers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to trouble the Kiwis in the opening as well as 'death' overs.
