STUMPS - DAY 2

NZ 28-0 (9 ovs) vs India 557-5d | Scorecard

Good start from Ashwin as he starts bang on the mark, on the areas just on and around the off-stump, trying to make Guptill drive against the spin through the off-side.

The Kiwi opener carefully plays out the first over of spin from the Indians. Ravi Jadeja comes on from the other end with India using spinners from both ends.

Latham is content to defend the left-arm spinner with just a couple of overs left for stumps.

Guptill can't resist having a go at the spinners, slog sweeping Ashwin over midwicket for a six. This is quite brave by the Kiwi opener in the final over of the day and the Indians won't certainly mind it.

At stumps on Day 2, NZ reach 28 for no loss in nine overs in reply to India's 557 for five declared. Guptill is unbeaten on 16 from 28 balls, while Latham is on six at close.

 NZ 17-0 (4 ovs) vs India 557-5d | Scorecard

The five-run penalty for Jadeja for running on the pitch means New Zealand start with five runs on the board without even having faced a ball.

Mohammed Shami to open the bowling for the hosts and facing him is Martin Guptill. The Kiwi opener needs some runs in this match to keep his place in the Test team. He defends the first four balls before edging the fifth ball for a four through thirdman.

He is not moving his front foot across and looking to play from the crease, after having fallen over and being dismissed leg before wicket in the Kanpur Test.

Umesh Yadav to bowl the second over. Latham gets off the mark with a single before Guptill flicks a full delivery through square leg for a four before he sees off the rest of the over.

New Zealand are 17 for no loss in four overs before spin is introduced in the form of Ravi Ashwin.

India 557-5 dec (169 ovs) vs NZ | Scorecard

New Zealand's bowlers doing well to keep the Indian batsmen at bay and not give away the boundaries with both Jadeja and Rohit throwing their bats at everything.

The Indians in the dressing room have all changed to their white and a declaration looks imminent. The hosts would be looking to reach around the 550-run mark and give New Zealand around 8-10 overs to survive on the second day.

Some controversy out in the middle as Jadeja is penalised for running on the pitch as India are docked five runs as penalty. He hit the shot and ran straight down the middle of the pitch and umpire Bruce Oxenford immediately issues another warning. He was earlier warned by Kumar Dharmasena for the same.

Rohit approaching his fifty as he cuts a short ball from Henry past point for a four to move into the 40s. He clips the next ball behind square for two runs to take the score to 550 (not including the five penalty runs).

Rohit looks in no hurry at the moment but is still scoring at a good rate. He brings out his limited overs game to the park, glancing Boult fine on the leg side for a four and then steers the next ball fine on the off-side past the flying slip for another four to take his score to 30 from 42 balls.

Rahane was unlucky to miss out on a double century but he showed great commitment to the team's cause as he went for the big hits when he could have easily taken ones and twos and cruised to the landmark.

Ravindra Jadeja sent in ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha as India look for a few quick runs.

He is struck on the pads right in front off the first ball he faces but he is saved by a thin inside edge, how close was that!

Boult can't believe it and he suffers more pain when Jadeja lofts the fourth ball over mid-on for a four to get off the mark.
15:07   Kohli dismissed for 211 before India cross 500

India 500-4 (157 ovs) vs NZ | Scorecard

Rohit Sharma will hope to get a few runs against this tired New Zealand attack. It remains how long India want to bat in their first innings and if they would declare on Day 2.

Rahane hits a full delivery from Santner over the fielder at covers for a four before taking a single and Rohit keeps strike with one from the last ball.

Rahane taking a liking to Santner as he repeats the inside out lofted shot in his next over for another four as he looks to get to his double century. He comes down the track to Jeetan Patel in the next over and looks for the heave over midwicket but fails to make proper connection for a single to deep midwicket.

Rohit Sharma takes 20 balls to get his eye in before he comes down the track and lofts Patel over long-on for a six.

Rahane in a bit of hurry as he comes down the track and despite Santner adjusting his length the right-hander manages to flat bat it straight back over the bowler for a four followed by a single to take his score to 185.

He goes after a wide full delivery from Santner, getting a thick outside edge but it falls short of the fielder at short thirdman.

The bowlers are also getting tired as Kohli smashes a wide delivery from Neesham through the covers for a four.

Will India go for the runs or take it easy till the tea break and then launch an assault in the post-tea session?

As of now, they seem content to play for tea and come back refreshed after a small break.

At tea on Day 2, India have reached 456 for three in 147 overs, having scored 98 runs in 30 overs in the post-lunch session and importantly without losing a wicket for the third straight session.

Kohli was flawless as he literally eased his way to 207 from 363 balls, hitting 19 fours, without never having to accelerate as he collected the runs easily with a lot of ones and twos.

Kohli is the first Indian to hit two double centuries as a Test captain!

What an emphatic batting performance it has been from the Delhi right-hander as he never looked in any trouble throughout his innings.

Earlier this year, Kohli had hit a double ton in the West Indies before he suffered a lull, failing to cross the half-century mark in eight innings, but the Indian batting star has come back with a bang. What a player!

It is turning out to be another tough day for the Kiwi bowlers with both Indian batsmen looking totally comfortable out in the middle and the pitch looking perfect for batting.

Medium pacer Jimmy Neesham comes into the attack in place of Boult as Kohli drives the first ball straight but can't beat the fielder at mid-off and gets just a single and Rahane picks one on the off-side.

Santner comes back and he switches to over the wicket, looking to bowl on the rough outside the batsmen's leg stump.

Henry continues his short ball tactics against Rahane who looks to pull but fails to get it off the middle before he lets one go through and the next one too.

He is unsure about the short balls as he has another swipe but can't make proper connection before he steers another short ball to thirdman for two runs.

Rahane again pulls the last ball but can't find the gap on the leg side and another single in the next over off Patel takes him to 99.

Change in the bowling as Trent Boult replaces Rahane and no surprise he starts with a short ball. It is not as quick as Henry and Rahane easily pulls it on the leg side for a single to bring up his century from 210 balls, his eight ton in Tests.

It was not an easy landmark for the Mumbai right-hander and he was made to work really hard by the Kiwi bowlers especially the fast bowlers as they peppered him with short balls at his body.

In the first hour on Day 2, India have made 46 runs in 14 overs to reach 313 for three in 104 overs with Kohli on 125 and Rahane on 103 as the duo have so far put on 213 runs for the fourth wicket.

Rahane had a few problems with the short deliveries on Day 1 and no surprise that Henry tries the same tactics again.

But this time Rahane is ready and waiting as he pulls a short ball square on the leg side for a four to take his score into the 90s.

Henry bowls another bouncer as Rahane ducks under it but he is struck on the helmet off the next ball as he can't get out of the way of another short ball which doesn't rise as much. The ball hits the protection of the back of his helmet as the physio comes out to attend but he is okay to continue after a few minutes.

As expected, the next ball is again short and this time Rahane pulls it and gets a top edge which goes fine on the leg side for two runs. The next ball is pulled square this time for a single to deep square leg.

Henry bowls it full to Kohli, who steers it through the vacant thirdman region for a four.

Kohli makes it back to back fours as he plays a cracking straight drive off the first ball of the pacer's next over. He then throws his bat at a wide delivery for a single to the sweeper fielder. The last ball is short but outside the off-stump as Rahane lets it go through.

It's pace from the other end as Matt Henry comes in from the other end. Kohli flicks the first ball through midwicket to pick up two runs before he taps the fourth ball on the leg side for one.

Santner produces an edge from Rahane but it falls well short of the slip fielder for two runs through thirdman followed by a single.

India 267-3 (90 ovs) vs NZ | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the third and final Test between India and New Zealand in Indore, on Sunday.

It was India all the way on Day 1 as captain Virat Kohli roared back to form with a superbly crafted century on a tricky pitch to take India to a comfortable 267 for three at the Holkar stadium.

The Indian skipper, who went without a 50-plus score in his last seven innings across five Tests, was back in his elements, stroking an unbeaten 103 -- his 13th hundred in his 48th match. Kohli's century was also the first by any batsman from the either side in this three-match series.

He was complemented brilliantly by Ajinkya Rahane, who was scratchy to begin with but settled down well to remain unbeaten on 79.

The duo added 167 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket in 54 overs after New Zealand had initially pegged India back at 100 for three in 36 overs.
