Pope steers the next ball to point for one before Bumrah gets one to bounce extra but Root is happy to see it sail through to the keeper.

Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin is in the dressing room, he was struggling with his injury and might not be required to bowl if the pacers continue to bowl so well.

Root and Pope only focussed on just playing out the fast bowlers and stay out as long as possible.

England are 47 for two in 18 overs, needing another 474 runs for victory, in conditions where the fast bowlers are making merry.

15:49   Ishant strikes again; England lose both openers

Eng 32-2 (12 ovs); Target to win: 521 | Scorecard

Ishant strikes again in his next over. Once again the outgoing delivery does the trick as Cook plays away from his body, to get the edge and is caught by KL Rahul at second slip for 17.

Ishant may not have the delivery which comes in to the left-hander but he still bowls in good areas, making the batsmen play more often than not.

Cook suffers another failure as he walks back for 17 as England are reduced to 32 for two in 12 overs.

15:43   Ishant strikes early on Day 4, England lose Jennings

Eng 28-1 (11 ovs); Target to win: 521 | Scorecard

The impressive Ishant Sharma to open the bowling for India on Day 4, who will be looking to make the new ball count and pick up a few early wickets.

He strikes in the first over with the wicket of Keaton Jennings, who edges the outgoing delivery and is caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant for 13.

A perfect start for India as Ishant takes just five deliveries to claim the first wicket.

It was close to the off-stump and Jennings had to play at it with Ishant getting the angle from round the wicket, as the left-hander poked at it only to get the edge and was caught behind.

Jasprit Bumrah to bowl from the other end. He also produces a beauty to beat Alastair Cook, who hangs his bat out and is beaten before he takes a single in the covers and Joe Root blocks the last two balls of the over.

15:24   Dominant India eye early wickets on Day 4

Eng 23-0 (9 ovs); Target to win: 521 | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 4 of the third Test between England and India in Nottingham on Tuesday.

England will have to set a record for the highest successful fourth-innings chase if they are to win the third Test against India after the dominant tourists declared at 352 for seven with Virat Kohli making 103, on Day 3.

Englands opening pair of Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings survived a tricky nine overs before the close of play, reaching 23 without loss.

The hosts require another 498 runs to win over the final two days of play and history suggests that is highly unlikely.

Only four teams have scored more than 400 to win a Test, West Indies 418 to beat Australia in 2003 being the highest. The highest fourth-innings winning Test total at Trent Bridge is 284 by England against New Zealand in 2004.

Having started the third day on 124 for two, India were barely troubled through two and a half sessions of steady, if unspectacular, accumulation under grey skies.

After a fruitless morning session for Englands bowling attack, Cheteshwar Pujara, who had been dropped in the morning on 40, was caught at first slip by Cook off the bowling of Ben Stokes for 72, ending his partnership with Kohli at 113.

Skipper Kohli, who was out for 97 in the first innings, took few risks during his patient knock which finally came to an end after 197 balls when he was trapped lbw by seamer Chris Woakes.

Hardik Pandya was unbeaten on 52 when Kohli finally decided to declare and let his bowlers give Cook and Jennings an uncomfortable mini-session.

England, who lead the five-Test series 2-0, suffered a blow during the morning when wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow had to leave the ground with what turned out to be a fractured finger.

Bairstow, a key part of the home teams batting line-up, was hit on the end of the middle finger by a James Anderson delivery but is expected to bat in their second innings.
